After two triumphant studio releases (W.E.T. and RISE UP), melodic hard rock super group W.E.T. (see my previous reviews if you want to know what that stands for) is back with a huge 2CD/DVD package of their first ever live show, taped in Stockholm, Sweden on January 17th, 2013. Please note that this review is for the CD portion of the release only.
With musicians of the calibre that make up this band, I would have been more surprised if this live album did not sound good, and sure enough, ONE LIVE sounds amazing. It’s a live show, so obviously the songs don’t sound quite as powerful or smooth as their studio counterparts, but if anyone had foolish doubts that W.E.T. could pull off their hard rock and vocal harmonies live…well, shame on you. The band is virtually flawless throughout the 19-track live portion of the release, bashing out fan favorites from the first album, and a large selection of tracks from the second, which had yet to be released when the show was recorded. Regardless, the fans are on board with the band throughout the show and the band’s infectious energy shines through; they are obviously enjoying the opportunity to play these songs live.
Because the band only has 2 albums, and plays most of them, there isn’t much to complain about track list-wise. Indeed, the guys even play a few surprise hits from their other bands to much adoration from the crowd. Every song sounds great and Soto and Martensson deliver stand out vocals throughout the lengthy show. The band adds two new studio songs to the end of the album, “Bigger Than Both of Us” being one of the band’s trademark huge-sounding ballads, while “Poison (Numbing the Pain)” is a stomping mid-paced track with huge vocals from Soto.
This is an essential package, not only for W.E.T. fans, but for hard rock fans in general.
