Australia, you gotta love it. Not only did they give us cultural icons like Yahoo Serious and The Wiggles, not only did they somehow convince Americans that drinking Fosters at import prices was classy, but they’ve also got a pretty serious doom metal scene down under. Don’t believe me? Take a listen to Watchtower’s new 3-track demo and tell me I’m wrong.
Sludgy and pissed off, the Melbourne four piece live somewhere between Weedeater, Zoroaster, and The Melvins territories. Fat, fuzzy low end riffs soaked in groove and bongwater with a set of gnarled and graveled vocal chords. Yep, it’s good stuff. “Need Fear No Fall” and “The Arrow of Time” are pretty standard trudging doom sludge, but still f@#king nasty in the best possible way. “Superlapsarian” though is the real treat here though; wrapping the muck of the first two tracks in a swath of smoky psychedelia, the tune is a spacy head trip complete with flanged out six string indulgences and swelling feedback. I need to hear more from these guys…
The three tracks clock in at around 17 minutes, and for being a demo it sounds awfully doggone good. BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! It’s available as a name your price download through Watchtower’s Bandcamp page, so you’ve got zilch to lose by giving it a listen. Doom fans, I’m talking to you – check this one out and get in on Watchtower before everyone else does.
