Interview with Ralf of Odium

by Helias

ODIUM BAND 1 Hello, how are you? First of all, congratulations on your last official album album “Beautiful Violence” which was released one year ago. Of course I’d like to ask you a couple of questions about it below. Which are the main influences on the ‘Odium’?

Mainly Thrash Metal like old Metallica, Slayer and Exodus. You have only one word to describe the entire Odium career? Which word would that be? And why?

WEIRD ! Because we have been unlucky so many times. We sometimes feel like ANVIL… What does the Odium name mean for you?

Everything How did you get into playing music?

It was there…like day and night… What do you do when you are not playing with the band?

Writing new songs, trying to get some shows What’s your opinion on other kinds of music?

It´s okay as long as it is Heavy Metal… Which are the plans of Odium for the future?

Record a new CD with NHR, Tour across europe, get more fans Is there any Greek metal bands that you really like or want to share the stage?

We are not picky Well, you released your new album ‘Beautiful Violence’.What’s different in this album regarding to the previous one? Please tell us about the approach that you have chosen to create this album and production of the album. What’s the feedback of the new record till now?

Beautiful Violence is the most violent album Odium has ever released. It has more modern Thrash influences as any other ODIUM album before. Produced by Mario Jezik we could really try different things and we were suprised on how these songs sound!

odiumweb8 Can you tell me a little more about the lyrics, did anything particular inspire you?

Of course… any kind of violence inspired us. Take the song “Suffering” leading the listener to the violent dependence of sexuality How important is it to you that people pay attention to your lyrics apart from listening to your music?

Hmmm how important are the lyrics to you? I think people listening to Metal want good lyrics. If you listen to pop music, the most lyrics are just empty phrases without sense… And now I would like to discuss about some deplorable events. We are in the end of 2013 and three big metal personas have passed away… Ronnie James Dio, Peter Steele and Paul Grey (SLIPKNOT) and finaly Jeff Hanneman (SLAYER) . Are the last 4 years the most donsie years of heavy metal?

You know, many people passed away in the last 4 years… day after day children are dying from hunger, war and crime. Who calls their names? Who sends a Facebook Post for them? We all have to go that particular one day in our life. And people like DIO, Peter, Paul, or Jeff will be missed by many people. But I think they had good lives and only few worries… Five months have already passed after Jeff Hanneman (SLAYER) passing away. What would you like to say about that?

Time is ticking for all of us… What do you think of today’s music industry in general?

It is Hell….too many bands, too many labels…to few sex, drugs and Heavy Metal! Is technology part of your life or are you still a “romantic”?

I like technology, I use my smartphone and my ipad to stay in touch with my family when we are on tour…. I have beholden that heavy metal changes through the decades. Heavy and Thrash metal dominated over in 80’s, Death, Black and Power metal in 90’s and Metalcore and Nu Metal in the 00’s in general. 2010 was the beginning sign of the new decade. What do you see for the future?

I think there will be a nice mixture of different styles. Many old styles will revive. It will be interesting. I only hope GRUNGE will DIE ! What’s your opinion on downloading?

As I said…i love technology. But in the other way it is a pain in the ass. People download illegally tracks which cost the bands/producers a lot of money. In the 80´s we said: homefucking is killing prostitution…now it should be: Downloading illegally is killing Bands! If you could pick only one musician to work with, who would that be and why? Dave Mustaine because he is a great person and I like what he does. Could you respond to the following terms in just one word or sentence:

Thrash metal: Best Choice of music

Greece: LOVE IT ! Been working 6 month in Crete !

Politics: Liars! For every lie they deserve a bullet…but I am afraid there are not enough bullets

Black Sabbath: Unbelievable…these old men ROCK !!!

Prison break (tv series): I hate series…exept “THE SIMPSONS”

Greek Metal Scene: Very underrated ! Thank you for this interview. I wish to Odium all the best!!!

Thanks for your interest in our Band! Rock on!
