Interview with Loic of Holy Cross

By Helias Hello, Loic, how are you?

Hi Helias! I’m fine! Thanks! Which are the main influences on the ‘Holy Cross’ sound?

The main influences are very classics : Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Metallica, Megadeth… You have only one word to describe the entire ‘Holy Cross’ career? Which word would that be? And why?

Passion! We don’t play music for money but to travel and meet people everywhere we can. What does the ‘Holy Cross’ name mean for you?

This name is inspired by a Nordic cross (our logo) which was created when the crusaders invaded the North of Europe. There is nothing religious for us but it is more of a symbol How did you get into playing music?

Since my childhood, I ever hear famous rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple or Dire Straits around me. When I was teenager, I’m started to listen more & more rock music, to see some VHS videos. And at 15 I’ve bought my first guitar! What do you do when you are not playing with the band?

I have a job in an informatic company. All the musicians of the band work out of the band. What’s your opinion on other kinds of music?

I like rock music generally but not only that. But ilisten blues, classic and even electronic music. As music lets me bang my head and made me feel an emotion, that’s all I’m looking for 😉 Which are the plans of ‘Holy Cross’ for the future?

To make a lot of concerts in Europe in 2014!

HOLY CROSS 2 You are about to come to Greece? Do you know any Greek metal bands that you really like or want to share the stage?

We haven’t planned to come in Greece for the moment but we really want to come! If you have some contacts to share us, you’re welcome 😉 Yes I know some very good Greek metal bands like Firewind, Nightfall, Suicidal Angels or Septic Flesh! Well, you releasedyour last work ‘Place Your Bets’. Tell us some things about this release. I can see that this album is different to the other ones, but I don’t know why. Could you please give us some of those differences?

Our first album “Under The Flag” was a traditional heavy metal album with some epic pieces. “Place Your Bets” is more personal. We leave the Nordic mythology to make room to topical issues. This album talks about the choice of people in critical situation which is illustrated by the cover with this guy who play his life on the poker table to solve his problems. And now I would like to discuss about some deplorable events. We are in the middle of 2013 and three big metal personas have passed away… Ronnie James Dio, Peter Steele and Paul Grey (SLIPKNOT) and finaly Jeff Hanneman (SLAYER) .Are the last 4 years the most donsie years of heavy metal?

Nobody is eternal. It’s very sad for the heavy metal world because these artists have brought something to everyone of us and so their art will never die! Five months have already passed after Jeff Hanneman (SLAYER) passing away. What would you like to say about that?

RIP Jeff and thanks for your music! What do you think of today’s music industry in general?

I have no real opinion about that. I don’t play music to win money with my albums. The new technology makes that we can listen music on internet. Now we don’t have to buy CDs or magazines to discover some bands. So automatically, the music industry has changed. It’s a good think because each band can promote their music easier than some years ago. But it’s also the dark side of the music now, there is too much bands and it’s very very complicated because supply exceeds demand Is technology part of your life or are you still a “romantic”?

I like the new technologies but for the music I’m a little old school! ☺

I use a tubes-amps guitar with pedals effects, I’m listening my old cd’s and LP. I don’t like very much the digital music What’s your opinion on downloading?

I think that downloading is great the promotion of the bands. You play music in your room and you can have 6 billion of auditors, that’s cool no?

But the new way to listen music in digital form makes that the downloading exceed the sales of CDs. And why pay a digital music when you can have it for free!?

Personally, I don’t like digital music and I prefer to buy the physical album for the artwork, the booklet, … and I can listen the cd in my car with my old cd player If you could pick only one musician to work with, who would that be and why?

Hey it’s a very hard question…. Hum I think that would be Steve Harris. Maybe we could write the new masterpiece of “Iron Cross” together? (laughs !!!) Thank you for this interview. I wish to ‘Holy Cross’ all the best!!!

Thank you Helias! Thanks to Metal Rules! See you soon on stage!! Hell Yeah!
