Interview with Thomas Gurrath of Debauchery (by Ilias)

A Blood God rises up from Germany named Debauchery. This blood beast plays its mid paced death metal more than ten years. This beast springs its wings all over Europe supporting Six Feet Under and teaches how to kill! These bloodstained guys give a lesson in violence and the ‘apostle of war’ Thomas Gurrath, the frontman talks about the new album ‘King of Carnage’, the hit charts and many more…

THIOMAS268203_2278951777927_6214900_n Hello, how are you?

Hey, everything’s ok! Debauchery hit the German album charts and I`m in the studio again to work on the new BLOOD GOD record. Which are the main influences on the ‘Debauchery’ sound? As far as I can listen Six Feet Under and AC/DC are two of them.

Metallica, Slayer, Motörhead, Iron Maiden, Manowar – stuff like that. Halford is very important. Resurrection and Crucible are awesome. And Judas Priest of course, Jugulator was a big influence for me. You have only one word to describe the entire ‘Debauchery’ career? Which word would that be? And why?

Blood. Blood is my trademark. Songs about the World of Blood Gods, artificial Blood on stage, Blood Babe strip show, Blood God Hard Rock… What does the ‘Debauchery’ name mean for you?

Nothing, at the time I found no better name, so today I have to live with it.

THOMAS971127_10201319153605500_123047430_n How did you get into playing music?

I love Hard Rock and Metal. It started with 11 or 12 with Guns`n`Roses’s ‘Appetite for Destruction’, . With 15 I began to play guitar. Angus Young was my favourite guitar player. What do you do when you are not playing with the band?

I have to organise all the stuff. Something like a booker, manager, artist, graphic designer and promotion agent. Otherwise I love all the nerd stuff like tabletop wargames, horror movies and I read a lot of Warhammer novels. But most of the time I`m working on my own stuff and the World of Blood Gods. What’s your opinion on other kinds of music?

I only listen to metal and rock mostly. But there are great artists in every genre. Which are the plans of ‘Debauchery’ for the future?

We will be on tour with Eisregen in November and December, right now I make a new album for BLOOD GOD. Afterwards I don`t know. You are about to come to Greece? Do you know any Greek metal bands that you really like or want to share the stage?

Would be cool to come to Greece, but so far nothing is booked. Actually I only know Rotting Christ from Greece. Once I have met them in Switzerland.

DEBAUCHERY BAND603327_499932243428263_1314371793_n Well, you released your last work ‘King of Carnage’.Tell us some things about this release. I can see that this album is different to the other ones, but I don’t know why. Could you please give us some of those differences?

It`s better than the others, but I think every musician think his new album is the best one. So I don`t know. I always try to make a cool metal album. Hope this one is cool. And now I would like to discuss about some deplorable events. We are in the end of 2013 and three big metal personas have passed away… Ronnie James Dio, Peter Steele and Paul Grey (SLIPKNOT) and finally Jeff Hanneman (SLAYER). Are the last four years the most  depressing years of heavy metal?

I was born in 1980 so I missed a lot anyway. I was told that the 80’s were great for Heavy Metal, but I was in Kindergarden at that time. I have never seen Bon Scott live and never seen Guns`n`Roses. So, for me it was bad from the beginning, haha. But some bands and people pass away and new one step in. Or I hope so. What do you think of today’s music industry in general?

The Internet fucks everything, also the music industry. Is technology part of your life or are you still a “romantic”?

I`m on facebook, have a smart phone, 2 laptops and make recordings that most people play on computers. So yes, technology is a big part of my life. But if I would have a choice I would first shut the internet down and kick all mobile phones in the trash. I have beholden that heavy metal changes through the decades. Heavy and Thrash metal dominated over in 80’s, Death, Black and Power metal in 90’s and Metalcore and Nu Metal in the 00’s in general. 2010 was the beginning sign of the new decade. What do you see for the future?

Haha, I hope people go back to the roots again. Heavy Metal is the best, I don`t need that other stuff. What’s your opinion on downloading?

Do you mean illegal downloading? I mean both illegal and legal one.

It`s killing the industry, the labels will have less money. And because of that they will spent not so much in bands. There are already very few in metal who can live from their music.

THOMAS293533_2439800919055_102333190_n If you could pick only one musician to work with, who would that be and why?

Halford. Best voice of all, very creative, much diversity in his records. Just awesome. Thank you for this interview. I wish to ‘Debauchery’ all the best!!!

Thanks and cheers.
