Inspired by the soon-to-be-released book by Billboard-charting guitarist Sean Kelly – Metal on Ice: Tales from Canada’s Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Heroes (publication date: Sept. 14/2013, Dundurn Press), the Metal on Ice: Tunes from Canada’s Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Heroes companion EP features legendary artists singing new versions of their chart-topping heavy metal hits from the 1980s. Slated for release in October 2013, the album will include new recordings of original hit songs by celebrated Canadian artists Brian Vollmer (Helix), Carl Dixon (Coney Hatch), Darby Mills (Headpins), Lee Aaron, Nick Walsh (Slik Toxik) and Russ Dwarf (Killer Dwarfs).
On September 22, Kelly and these six vocalists will enter the Coalition Music Studios in Toronto to record the EP, which includes “Metal on Ice”, a brand new original song featuring all the artists that will be released exclusively as a digital download. An extensive PledgeMusic campaign in support of the project offers fans the ultimate in-studio experience: an opportunity to gain behind-the-scenes access to the entire recording process that day! Pledging fans get to bring a friend along to the studio for an inside look at the making of the Metal on Ice EP as the singers are recording, and they will be the very first people to hear some of the new music and even jump in on some gang vocals for the “Metal on Ice” track. In addition, they will get their name in the liner notes of the album, experience an exclusive Q&A session with the Metal on Ice artists conducted by Christopher Ward (former MuchMusic VJ), have lunch with the artists and receive an autographed free copy of the Metal on Ice book and EP. Pledging fans also have access to many other experiences and memorabilia at all price points, including: advance copies of the EP, guest list to the live show, Skype guitar lessons with Sean Kelly, access to a pre-show cocktail reception, a signed Kramer guitar and autographed Sennheiser microphones.
“The Metal on Ice project is a chance for fans to hear the stories behind the songs while reconnecting with the songs that helped shape the Canadian music landscape,” said Kelly. “It also presents an opportunity for lovers of Canadian hard rock and heavy metal to come together in support of the genre and recognize the importance of celebrating its successes. We wanted to give true fans access to incredible experiences and believe we have done just that with the exclusive opportunities available through our PledgeMusic campaign.”
The official Metal on Ice CD release party will take place on Saturday, October 26 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto. The live show will feature all the album’s participating artists along with host Christopher Ward and the author/musical director of the night, Sean Kelly. Tickets are on sale now for $19.85 at www.ticketfly.com/event/334341-metal-on-ice-live-canadas-toronto/.
With the support of the book, EP and live show, there is no question that the Metal on Ice project will bring the stories of Canadian hard rock and heavy metal to life. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for updates as the project unfolds via www.metalonice.com and Facebook.
