Royal Southern Brotherhood

Royal Southern Brotherhood
2012, Ruf Records
Rating: 4/5

Another excellent release I discovered at the same time as I found the Oli Brown and both are on Ruf Records. There must be something about this label? Royal Southern Brotherhood are heavily based in the Blues but have a bit of a Rock influence but not as  pronounced as the Oli. These guys have a bit of a Keb’ Mo’ style happening in places.

A bit more laid back and bluesy than the Oli disc but still quite good for different reasons. This is the kind of disc to put on during a hot summers afternoon and kick back with an ice cold beverage and chill. Very mellow and calming. After listening to the album several times and enjoying it very much I noticed that the guitar is handled by Devon Allman, son of Gregg. No wonder the guitar playing is so good, it’s in his blood. The song “Got Ta Keep Rocking” is one of the most upbeat number on here and it is mid-tempo at best. Some nice, yet simple playing here making for one standout track. I find myself coming back to this one. Another upbeat track is “Hurts My Heart” and has more of a Country Rock groove to it rather than a Blues Rock number. Either way it is the other standout on the album.

Ruf Records are releasing some great albums if this one and the Oli Brown are any indication. Based heavily in the Blues but with enough Rock to give it an edge. Looking forward to hearing more from these guys.
