Funk. Groove. Soul. Psychedelic. These are not words usually associated with Metal. However, they can on occasion be affiliated with some of our Melodic Hard Rock brethren and in this case typified by Electric Boys. These Swedes had a run of three well-received albums in the late 80’s and early 90’s before calling it quits in 1994.
Fortunately for those of us who cared the first time around, the band is back with album #4, the oddly titled, but completely appropriate, …AND THEM BOYS DONE SWANG. Sounds like something Aerosmith would say. All of the hippie-stoner, sleazy-swagger sound is still fully intact and the band even cranks it up a notch. It is indeed a swinging album and likely their heaviest.
The band drop a heavy hit of a dozen tracks in the 3-4 minute range. The drug/ humour lyrics are spiked through the songs from the lead-off cut ‘Reeferlord’ and the odd (but cool) ‘Father Popcorn’s Magic Oysters’. All the songs have got that funky swang laid back thing, open-hanging riffs, wide open hi-hat, slap bass and guitar noodling. Guitar and bass are almost as equally important in these types of bands and the bass does take a prominent role in many of the songs. The main thing is that these songs are fun, not intense or dramatic in anyway, just injected with rock’n’roll spirit of free-flowin’ jams and high times with good friends. Speaking of friends, it\’s the original line-up of friends so the sound is intact from the early major label days, with Conny\’s charismatic delivery opening the door to the party.
There are very few bands that still even attempt this funky sound, as it has fallen mostly out of fashion, with perhaps only Extreme, Enuff Z’Nuff and a very few others even bothering anymore. That’s why I’m giving this album a higher grade than maybe it deserves as a fine example of the alternate influences a band can bring into their sound to take it from merely good to great. Do yourself a favour. Check out Electric Boys one of the original stoner rock bands, doing it and doing it well, way before it was considered cool.
