The Dojo Workhorse Releases: Weapons Grade Romantic

Out now via LOAD Music, Weapons Grade Romantic is the new release from The Dojo Workhorse – the solo moniker of Dan Vacon and the emotional counterpoint to his main group – The Dudes.

Since the early rough demos, the regional and online response for Dojo has been overwhelming, prompting Vacon to perform the material live as a solo act.  Home-made CDRs were flying off of local consignment shelves and word spread through the Calgary music community building the band into a local super-group of sorts, featuring eclectic instrumentation from lapsteel to cello.

Unable to ignore the public appeal, Vacon was convinced to record a proper full-length album pulling from the “best of” his demoed material with Juno Award winning producer Russell Broom (Sam Roberts, Chixdiggit, Jann Arden).  Broom’s mission statement was to maintain the haphazard charm of the early home recordings, while adding a more universally accessible sheen.  To the surprise and delight of everyone, Weapons Grade Romantic blossomed into something far more affecting than just a “Dudes side project”.

String sections, horns, and some of Vacon’s favourite Canadian musicians fill out the sound of this unique album; its balance of rough edgy heart, with the palatable sounds of blue-eyed soul and acoustic pop is undeniable.  It feels like a blue-eyed Sam Cooke fronting a gloriously sloppy version of The Band set to a precious low-fi backing track.

If the overwhelming preliminary industry response for The Dojo Workhorse is any indication, 2009 may well be the breakout year for Dan Vacon.

OUR LADY PEACE:  U.S. Tour Starts October 19; “The End Is Where We Begin” Impacting At Radio Now

OUR LADY PEACE–Raine Maida (vocalist), Duncan Coutts (bass), Jeremy Taggart (drums), Steve Mazur (guitar)—will be kicking off a U.S. headlining tour starting October 19 in Solana Beach, CA to promote their seventh studio album, BURN BURN, which was released July 21 via Coalition Entertainment (Records) through Warner Music Group’s Independent Label Group.  While the trek is set to conclude October 31, more dates are being added throughout the rest of the year.

The album, which debuted at #41 on the Billboard “Top 200 Albums” chart, has already produced a hit single with "All You Did Was Save My Life," thanks to heavy rotation at four different formats:  Alternative, Top 40, Triple A and Active.  The video stars fellow Canadian, Shenae Grimes, of "90210" and "Degrassi: The Next Generation" fame.

"The End Is Where We Begin" is the second single is now being serviced to radio and has recently been added to stations nationwide including KDGE/Dallas, KTBZ/Houston, WKRK/Cleveland, KRBZ/Kansas City, WPBZ/West Palm Beach and WGRD/Grand Rapids.  A video for the song will make its premiere in the next couple of weeks.

Primarily self-produced in lead singer Raine Maida’s Los Angeles home studio, BURN BURN marks the longest period between studio albums for Our Lady Peace.  It also signifies a sonic and philosophical rebirth.  The band now enjoys a creative and professional freedom that they haven’t experienced since the release of their now classic debut.  “I think about the way we made NAVEED,” Maida recalls.  “We were just starting, we knew nothing about the business and we had no expectations.  It was four guys in a room just trusting their instincts.  We went back to that.  ‘Liberating’ doesn’t really even sum it up.”

BURN BURN is a triumphant return to what Maida terms “a proper, mature rock album,” steeped in the kind of raw intensity that drove their early material.  Blinding rays of anthemic light make way to the tender poise and precision of a band that was looking for a way out and found a satisfying new way in.

Our Lady Peace’s live show is as good as it’s ever been and was on display during July’s sold-out shows in New York City and Los Angeles that had Billboard gushing, "OLP proved their readiness as arena-worthy superstars during the opening night of the Canadian act’s U.S. tour.”   The performance in Los Angeles left the Troubadour none-too-pleased with the damage OLP incurred.  Maida victoriously climbed up to walls to the second floor during "All You Did Was Save My Life," leaving a heap of destruction in his wake.  A fan caught the stunt on video and it can be seen on YouTube (www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrSVi5Ce_go).

The album has been racking up rave reviews since the album’s release:

“…a nice return to the soaring rock they made their name on.  Lead singer Raine Maida sounds more mature than ever – mostly forsaking his once eye-popping falsetto – and brings a poetic touch to his tales of everyday struggle and hope…Often praised for their energetic live show, OLP keeps the anthemic tracks flowing with ‘The End Is Where We Begin,’ ‘Escape Artist,’ ‘Refuge,’ and the blistering ‘White Flags.’  Check This Track Out: ‘Monkey Brains’ is a manic blast of energy that features a – dare I say it – Iron Maiden-influenced effort by bassist Duncan Coutts.”

–John Kosik, Associated Press

“Fingerprints of the band’s past are all over it, from the frantic basslines and guitar blasts found on the eccentric ‘Monkey Brains’ to stripped-down rocker ‘White Flags’…the soaring, piano-driven ‘Never Get Over You’ is proof that singer Raine Maida can still write a killer ballad.”

–Evan Lucy, Billboard

“…the slower moments are anthemic rather than sappy and the fist-pumping rockers are infused with righteousness and not mirth, with the two extremes tied together with an earthbound spaciness that splits the difference between U2 and Coldplay.”

–Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

“…a bombastic rock record…”

–Mike Schiller, Popmatters.com

Jim Davies, the man who gave The Prodigy’s biggest hits a guitar-shaped boot up the electronic arse, has to launched his debut instrumental guitar album on Mascot Records. ELECTRONIC GUITAR is a pulsating monster of a record, showcasing Davies’ ingenious guitar techniques that blur the line between synths and six-strings.

ELECTRONIC GUITAR is Davies’ debut album as an instrumental artist. It’s a powerful statement of intent from the revered pioneer that should appeal to guitarists and non-guitarists alike…

“My mission statement was to push the boundaries of the guitar instrumental album,” says Jim, “I saw little point in trying to emulate the kind of virtuoso, highly technical albums of Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert and Joe Satriani. They’ve got that side of the genre well and truly covered!

As far as bona fide guitar heroes go, Jim Davies was a late starter. The veteran of the UK electronic-rock crossover scene began playing at 16. However, his delayed introduction to the instrument was no handicap: three years after his first power-chord, he was a finalist in Guitarist magazine’s Guitarist of The Year competition. Davies earned his place in the final with an instrumental that demonstrated his unique sound, developed while still in his teens.

In 1995, a chance meeting with Prodigy main man Liam Howlett gave Jim the opportunity to take his innovative playing to a wider audience. Seizing the moment, Davies handed Howlett a demo tape. Liam was so impressed by what he heard, he asked Jim to join him as Prodigy’s touring guitarist. The subsequent tour took in The Prodigy’s famous Glastonbury appearance of 1995 and headline slots at festivals across the globe.

“The dance scene became a massive source of inspiration for me at a time when I felt I’d taken my rock style playing as far as it could go,” says Davies. “I loved all the squelchy filter sounds and layers of synth lines, so I started using more guitar effects to try and emulate those sounds.”

“The plan was to incorporate my love of electronic music into the world of the guitar instrumental. It was important to me that I did this album in my own style. I’ve always been into effects and creating un-guitar like sounds, so this is an electronic-based guitar album using nothing but the guitar itself to create the more ‘techno’-like sounds. In-fact all the sounds on the record except the drums and bass are guitar generated!!”

“I hope I have succeeded in taking the guitar instrumental genre down a slightly different road… or murky back alley”.

Daughter of Meat Loaf, Pearl Aday to enter the Rock fray with debut CD, Little Immaculate White Fox, January 2010

Pearl Aday, who is quickly making a name for herself in the music world, will release her US debut collection, “Little Immaculate White Fox.”

With a rock lineage that declares her, “To the manor born,” Pearl has created a collection of songs that takes you on a rock and roll journey.  She was named after the infamous Janis Joplin, God Daughter to Maria Muldaur, daughter of Meat Loaf and wife to Scott Ian of Anthrax.  In addition, she has toured as a back-up singer with Motley Crue and she and her band have opened for  Velvet Revolver.

In a synchronistic tale told to her startled pregnant mom before she was born, a psychic said, “Your daughter will sing and will resemble a Little Immaculate White Fox.”  Pearl, all grown now with a mane of platinum curls, a long, lithe figure and innocent look on her face with the slyness and intelligence of a fox, has been injected with the passion for rock and roll and is cutting a path across the music world.

Her new cd, with the help of husband and band member Scott Ian of Anthrax, is a cross between raw rock and roll and a sweetness that comes from Pearl’s soul.  The band has created a sound that combines influences from all genres of rock:  from blues to heavy Metal.    Pearl adds , “I just want to bring it all back to the real rock and roll, the soul, the emotion.  I strip it all down and it comes from a raw and naked place inside me.”

Other friends appear on the CD including Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains) and Ted Nugent on separate tracks.  The album was produced by Joe Barresi (Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Bad Religion.) and features original songs with the exception of a soulful and rocking cover of Tina Turner’s “Nutbush City Limits”  produced by Pearl (the band) and mixed by Warren Riker.  In addition, the newest original track Broken White was produced and mixed by Jay Ruston (The Donnas, Steel Panther)."

PEARL is: Pearl Aday (vocals) Marcus Blake (bass) Nalle Colt (guitar) Jim Wilson (guitar) Scott Ian (guitar) and Eric Andrews (drums).

Pearl will be playing two special acoustic dates this October, opening for legends The Doors:

Tues, October 6                    Los Angeles, CA                                          Club Nokia

Fri, October 9                        Anaheim, CA                                                The Grove
