Thrash from Norway? Highly untypical in itself, and if you also consider the fact that Susperia have former members of Old Man’s Child among their personnel, this is even less typical. However, that’s no black mark against them, as Susperia do have the ability to thrash out with anything San Francisco, New York, Arizona, Brazil or Germany can throw at them.
ATTITUDE picks up where 2007’s CUT FROM STONE leaves off, except that they’ve dropped a lot of the Pantera “post-thrash” (how I hate that term) sound, going back to their Testament influences and a more melodic, less abrasive version of classic 1989 thrash. Keep the speed, the hooks and the riffs, but infuse with three parts Testament, two parts Iced Earth, one part Sacred Reich, and one part middle-era Metallica, and you have a winning combination that absolutely can’t fail. As if to highlight the Testament connection, ‘Sick Bastard’ has Chuck Billy doing guest vocals (along with Shagrath of Dimmu Borgir), and is one of the best songs on ATTITUDE.
Susperia definitely have an ear for the catchy chorus, and ATTITUDE is no different, with simple but effective choruses in ‘The Urge’, ‘Attitude’ and ‘Another Turn’ making it a very accessible album. ‘Mr. Stranger’ threatens to be a no-mark ballad, but dismisses the idea almost immediately with a rousing mid-section.
Susperia aren’t going to win any awards in the lyric-writing department any time soon, but who’s paying attention anyway, when there is gruff and muscular guitar riffing and big pounding fuck-you drumming to occupy your mind? Rather than tread the same worn out Bay Area clichés the way most modern thrashers are doing, Susperia are at least striking out in a different direction – possibly swimming against the tide, but they’ll either find India or their own New World. At the very least, it won’t be typical. Good stuff here!
