The Beatles Break Chart Records Around the World

Underlining their timeless appeal and unique status in music, The Beatles have broken multiple chart records around the world following the September 9, 2009 (9-9-09) CD release of their digitally re-mastered catalogue. In the major music markets of North America, Japan and the UK, consumers purchased more than 2.25 million copies of The Beatles’ re-mastered albums, individually and in two multiple-CD boxed sets, one in stereo and one in mono, during the first five days of release (excluding non-traditional retail outlets whose sales are not tracked by the chart compilers).

The Beatles’ original UK studio albums were re-mastered by a dedicated team of engineers at Abbey Road Studios in London over a four year period, carefully maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the original analogue recordings. The result is the highest fidelity the catalogue has seen since its original release.

The most popular band of the 20th century, The Beatles are beloved by music fans in the 21st century, as evidenced by their current unparalleled global chart performance:

·         US:  During the first five days of release, consumers purchased more than one million copies of re-mastered Beatles titles, and the individual CD and boxed sets debuted strongly across multiple Billboard charts.

o        On Billboard’s Comprehensive Albums chart, which lists the most popular album releases in the US, including current and catalogue titles, The Beatles set a new record for the most simultaneous titles by a single artist (18), including five of the top 10 and nine of the top 20.

o        On the Pop Catalog chart, The Beatles achieved another new Billboard chart first for the most simultaneous titles in the top 50 (16), a record they previously set themselves with 12 titles in December 1995.  The Beatles have nine of the chart’s top 10 titles, and all 14 re-mastered CDs are in the top 20, led by ‘Abbey Road’ at number one and ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ at number two.

o        On the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, ‘The Beatles’ stereo boxed set debuted at number 15, and ‘The Beatles in Mono’ limited edition boxed set debuted at number 40.

·         UK:  In last week’s chart, The Beatles had four titles in the top 10, seven in the top 40 and 16 in the top 75, including both the stereo and mono boxes, as well as 2000’s ‘Beatles 1’ compilation. This set a new record for the most simultaneous albums in the UK charts according to the UK Official Charts Company. In this week’s UK chart, The Beatles have 13 albums in the top 75.  A further 84,000 CDs were sold last week, bringing their total sales of the remasters to more than 354,000 in 11 days and their total UK sales this decade to 6,755,000.

·         Japan: All 14 re-mastered titles and boxed sets debuted in the top 25 of the international chart, including seven of the top 10, led by the stereo boxed set at number two, the mono boxed set at number three, ‘Abbey Road’ at four and ‘Let It Be’ at six. Across all titles and box sets, more than 840,000 albums were purchased by consumers in Japan in the first three days of sales.

·         Canada: The Beatles have 15 of the top 20 catalogue titles including all of the top 11. The stereo boxed set is a new entry in the current albums chart at number four, the highest debut for a boxed set in Canada since Nielsen SoundScan started tracking sales. Cumulative sales across all titles were just under 160,000 over the counter

·         France: All 14 of the re-mastered titles and boxed sets entered the latest album chart, including three in the top 10, led by ‘Abbey Road’ at number four, a new record for the most original studio albums in the French album chart in one week.

·         Italy: The Beatles have 17 titles in the current chart – all 14 re-mastered titles, the two boxed sets, plus the ‘1’ compilation, a record for the most simultaneous entries in the album chart.

·         Belgium: With 17 entries in the current chart – the 14 re-mastered titles, two boxed sets and ‘1’ compilation – The Beatles have set a new record for the most simultaneous albums in the Belgian chart as confirmed by chart compiler Ultrapop.

·         Sweden: The Beatles have 16 titles simultaneously in the top 60, led by ‘Abbey Road’ at number six. Local industry body IFPI have confirmed that this is a record for the Swedish charts.

·         Argentina: Seven of the current top 10 albums are Beatles re-masters, led by ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band at number two, ‘Abbey Road’ at number three and ‘The Beatles’ (The White Album) at number four.  All 14 re-mastered titles are in the top 20 and the boxed sets are at numbers 73 and 74 in the chart.

·         Spain: 13 Beatles albums plus both boxed sets debuted in the latest chart, a record for a single artist.  The combined sales of the boxed sets places them at number four in the chart.

·         Poland: All 14 re-mastered albums and two boxed sets debuted in the current top 100, led by ‘Abbey Road’ at six. This is a record for the highest number of simultaneous entries in the Polish chart.

·         Switzerland: 14 Beatles titles, including the stereo boxed set, debuted in the most recent album chart, a record for the most simultaneous titles in the album chart.

·         Denmark: The latest album chart includes 15 re-mastered Beatles titles, plus the ‘1’ compilation, including four of the top 20.

·         Australia: The Beatles have 14 titles in the current chart, including the ‘1’ compilation.

·         Germany: The combined sales of the stereo and mono boxed sets, with one boxed set counted as one unit sale, places them as the number three best seller in the latest chart.

·         Austria: The current top 75 contains 12 re-mastered titles plus the stereo boxed set.

·         Portugal: The re-mastered titles occupy 11 places in the current top 30 album chart, including three of the top 10.

·         Norway: The combined stereo and mono boxed sets debut at number three with a further 12 re-mastered titles in the top 100.

·         Colombia: Half of the current top 10 albums are Beatles re-masters titles.

·         Korea: During the first sales week The Beatles occupied 16 of the top 17 spots in Korea’s Hottracks album chart.

War Child Canada’s second annual Busking For Change, a day of great music on the streets of Toronto, will take place on Tuesday, September 29th, 2009. Celebrated musicians will be busking throughout the city at pre-determined locations in downtown Toronto. Money collected at each site, and through online donations, will support War Child.

Sass Jordan will be at First Canadian Place at noon for a 30 minute set.  Jordan has made a living singing, performing, writing and recording music internationally for the past thirty years. Winner of Billboard’s Best Female Rock Vocalist award, the bilingual Montrealer has toured and/or worked with many music heavyweights, including Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Van Halen, Carlos Santana and Joe Cocker.  Her latest CD, entitled From Dusk ‘Til Dawn features songs and sounds that reflect the atmosphere of the late 70’s Southern California scene. ‘I started out singing in Westmount Park, with my friends and a couple of acoustic guitars … passersby would stop and listen for a while, as we honed our skills in public’, says Jordan. “Naturally, this type of vocal harmony and melodic sensibility is now a staple in my repertoire, and one I had a blast revisiting on this current recording”.

Busking For Change will take place between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm on Tuesday, September 29th at major street corners and in busy downtown buildings. Students from across Canada will also busk for change at their schools and in their communities to support the cause.

The initial run of acts confirmed include: Chantal Kreviazuk, Ill Scarlett, Sass Jordan, Neverending White Lights, Shiloh, Down With Webster, Kevin Hearn and Thin Buckle, Liam Titcomb, USS, Arkells, Zack Werner, Brian Melo, Theo Tams, Lucas Silveira of The Cliks, Hollerado, Stephen Stanley (Lowest of the Low), Jadea Kelly & Arif (Protest The Hero) Kevin Fox, Low Level Flight, Drew Wright (Fall & Divide), JT (Staggered Crossing) Richard Underhill, Crush Luther, The Apollo Effect, Magneta Lane, Dodger and more.

Queen Guitarist Brian May Interviewed About Guitar Zeus CD Project

Fuel Records released  the Guitar Zeus project by legendary drummer Carmine Appice, featuring a compilation of 24 of the best Guitar Zeus songs. Conquering Heroes hit the streets on August 25th. The double-disc set showcases the prolific talents of many world renowned rock guitarists. Queen guitarist Brian May’s extraordinary lead guitar stylings are featured on the prolific song Nobody Knew (Black White House), a prominent track on the Guitar Zeus compilation.

Media personality Dave Lawrence recently interviewed Brian and excerpts from the interview are now featured on the Official Brian May web site. To view an interview excerpt transcript, please visit To hear the entire interview, please click here or visit .

"As soon as I heard the track, I thought it had a very haunting quality to it," remarks Brian May about the song Nobody Knew (Black White House), "evoking the 70’s in some ways perhaps, but with a very modern slant. I also found the backing track itself very powerful and appealing, driven by Carmine’s very recognizable style so I was keen to play on the track straight away, despite being incredibly snowed-under with work at the time!"

Author, clinician, drummer… Carmine Appice first came to prominence as the percussionist with the late 1960s psychedelic band Vanilla Fudge. He contributed distinctive background harmonies with bassist Tim Bogert, adding to the group’s high decibel sonic assault. After five albums, Appice and Bogert left Vanilla Fudge to form the blues rock quartet Cactus with vocalist Rusty Day and guitarist Jim McCarty. Eventually, Appice left Cactus with Bogert to join Jeff Beck in the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice, and then later joined Rod Stewart’s backing band in 1977, co-writing hit songs such as "Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?" and "Young Turks". In 1978, Appice played drums on Paul Stanley’s first solo album. He was a member of KGB featuring Ray Kennedy, Rick Grech, Mike Bloomfield and Barry Goldberg, and has recorded with Stanley Clarke, Ted Nugent, and Pink Floyd. He was the drummer for the bands King Kobra and Blue Murder, and toured with Ozzy Osbourne.

Appice first created Guitar Zeus in 1995 when he recruited some of the most famous guitarists in the world to be a part of his project, from Zakk Wylde and Ted Nugent to Brian May (Queen) and Slash (Guns N Roses), even tennis legend John McEnroe. Songs also included guest vocals by Dug Pinnick and Edgar Winter. Throughout the late 1990’s, three Guitar Zeus CDs were released to worldwide critical acclaim.

"Guitar Zeus for me was an amazing experience, working with so many great guitarists", Appice affirms. "It was fun picking out songs for each. Each guitarist loved the songs. It was awesome. I would do it again in a minute even though it was alot of work. I consider these drum tracks to be some of my best drum performances in my career!"

Juno Award-winning, internationally recognized singer/songwriter Sass Jordan will be performing special acoustic shows with the release of her latest CD From Dusk Til Dawn.  Jordan will be in London, Ontario on September 11th at Norma Jeans and in Toronto on September 12th at Hugh’s Room with special guest vocalist Emm Gryner joining her band.  Gryner contacted Jordan to see if she needed a background vocalist for the shows and her being a huge fan was ecstatic.

The intimate evening will include Jordan performing some of her greatest hits along with selections from her upcoming album From Dusk Til Dawn (Kindling Music/Warner).  The Toronto show will also be recorded for a future live album release and opening the show will be Oliver Pigott at 8:30pm with Jordan at 9:30pm.

From Dusk Til Dawn hits retail stores across Canada on September 15, 2009.  The new album features songs and sounds that reflect the atmosphere of the late 70’s Southern California scene. Joining Jordan on the CD is Derek Sharp, who also co-wrote, sang, produced and played multiple instruments, Peter Cardinali on bass guitar, Jorn Anderson on drums and percussion, Gary Breit on keyboards, Michael Borkosky on guitars and co-arrangements, and lastly, Chris Caddell on guitar.

Early Reviews:

“Sass Jordan’s raspy vocals always begged for a more stripped down backing with a band following her cues than the opposite. From Dusk ‘Til Dawn, is a marked improvement with producer Derek Sharp putting her in front of a R&B band on ‘Fell In Love Again,’ an alt-country band on ‘Why Did You’ and country strummers for her cover of Tom Waits’ ‘Ol ’55.’ It all works well” – Scene Magazine

“From Dusk centres on R&B and brings out some soulful singing. "Why Did You" has a Rod Stewart "Maggie May" feel and could be a hit.” — Tom Harrison, The Province

SIX FINGER SATELLITE: New album out Oct. 20th

Of all times, now is not the time to be musically submissive. That is why now is the time for Providence, RI’s Six Finger Satellite to return and devour all weak imitators. Six Finger Satellite have navigated the murky industry waters with a healthy embrace of adventure – and an even healthier disregard to mainstream flow – since the beginning of the 1990s. Naturally, they cemented a sound that many are vainly and often painfully trying to emulate to this day. Theirs is music grounded deep in bedrock but looking to the spheres, lifting spirits and discovering unchartered territories along the way. Prefiguring many figures in today’s electro-post-punk-hodgepodge scene. The current musical landscape would be immeasurably different if not for Six Finger Satellite.

After an 8-year hiatus in the outer orbits of a white noise galaxy, Six Finger Satellite resurfaced to Earth in 2009, issuing a new set of old unexplored horizons titled "Half Control" on Load Records and the upcoming "A Good Year for Hardness" on the brand new Providence label Anchor Brain. With this new record it is obvious that Six Finger Satellite is back and here to stay. This year’s model is like past years’ models; a little older perhaps, a lot wiser certainly. Recent retinkering has core deviants J. Ryan and Rick Pelletier joined by like-minded psycho souls Dan St. Jacques and Brian Dufresne on bass and drums respectively, giving this orbiter a madness and a magic that breaks with any preconceived notions yet can be instantly earmarked as “The 6FS Sound”.

Six Finger Satellite will release "A Good Year for Hardness" with Anchor Brain on October 20, 2009. Anchor Brain is a new record label whose goal is to utilize fresh marketing ideas to bring international attention to the many amazing and unique bands originating in Providence, Rhode Island. Plans include replacing obsolete compact discs with limited-edition silkscreened posters that come complete with a download code for the record. The label will also release limited-edition silk screened LPs, subscription-only unreleased tracks, and will have worldwide digital distribution.

"A Good Year for Hardness" is a no bullshit freak rock journey into the past, present, and future. It is timeless, elusive and in your everyday boring face. So bury your heads if you don’t want to get hit with the Six Finger Satellite stick.

“Wilson P.” off "A Good Year for Hardness" is currently available as a free download here: Please feel free to post this track on blogs, podcasts, etc.

Precious few up-and-coming rockers nowadays seem to have studied the recordings of such vintage hard blues rockers as Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.  But Jive Mother Mary is not your average up-and-coming rock band. Hailing from Alamance County, North Carolina, the group – which consists of Mason Keck (guitar and lead vocals), Nathan Coe (bass and vocals), Seth “Fluff” Aldridge (drums) – have just released their full-length debut, ‘All Fall Down.’ Recorded and produced in Raleigh by John Custer (Cry Of Love, COC, Dag) – who first met and recorded the band’s first self titled EP at the end of 2007 – the album is sure to catch the attention of rock fans worldwide, as evidenced by such standout tracks as “Save Me,” “Out of Love,” “Let Me In,” and “All Fall Down” (all of which are available for streaming on the band’s Myspace page).

“I feel the album is different from a lot of others,” explains Keck, “Mainly for the fact that it manages to integrate both new and old sounds, and many of the songs could easily cross  from the cliche label of ‘classic rock’ to something new and exciting.  Also the many layers that are in the album makes for a fun listen.” Adds Coe – “The recording experience was great, especially working with John Custer. I feel like the new album is more of the sound we were trying to pursue. It’s still ‘in your face rock-n-roll,’ but with our own little twist to it.”

Jive Mother Mary originally formed when all of its members were only 14 years old. Fast forward three years, and the group (which is still in high school) has played over 150 shows – in addition to giving back to the local community by playing shows for local charities.

So far, 2009 has seen Jive Mother Mary heighten their profile via syndicated radio marketing, regional radio in the Southeast, and tour stops with Easy Rider Magazine in several markets.  Along with their own headline shows, JMM will soon be sharing events with well known artists as they have in the past (David Allen Coe, Leon Russell, Jackyl, Dokken, The Black Crowes, The Wailers).  "We have matured a great bit over the past year,” says Alrdridge. “We can just read each other onstage without even looking.  We are so use to each others playing we can just play off of one another and that makes for a really fun live show."

The group has played consistently throughout 2009, and will continue to do so in the coming months – catch this fast-rising band now!

Prog Rockers GUILT MACHINE Unleashes New Album In The USA

Arjen Lucassen creates the new prog rock project GUILT MACHINE. The band releases ON THIS PERFECT DAY September 29th on Mascot Records USA. The album will be released in three formats. Regular Edition of CD in jewel case, Special edition of CD/DVD Digipak and a limited edition CD/DVD Digibook.

"In my view this is my best side project so far," explains Lucassen. "It comes completely from the heart, for it was written and recorded during a new inspiring phase in my life after my heavy depression. This, being an entirely new project, there were no expectations whatsoever, which enabled me to just let my inspiration guide me without any (outside) pressure."

As AYREON fans have come to expect from Arjen, the music of GUILT MACHINE ranges from dark and heavy to atmospheric and melancholic. But GUILT MACHINE introduces some new twists as well, particularly when it comes to the vocals. Rather than putting together an ensemble cast of vocalists from the prog, rock and metal scene, Arjen has enlisted the talents of a single alternative rock vocalist, Jasper Steverlinck.

How did Arjen get an alternative rock vocalist to switch genres and sing on a prog rock project? "In the beginning, it was hard to convince Jasper to sing on this album, because he comes from a completely different musical background," Arjen said. "He didn’t even know what prog was, but we’ve made a believer out of him! What I admire about Jasper’s voice, besides its beautiful clear timbre, is the emotion and credibility he puts into his performance and his enormous range. Because this project features just one singer I needed someone versatile enough to portray all of the different moods, and Jasper didn’t disappoint. And he’s a really nice and dedicated guy as well!"

For GUILT MACHINE, Arjen also chose to record with a different drummer, Chris Maitland (ex-PORCUPINE TREE). "Chris was the ideal choice this time, having both the power for the heavy sections and the subtle touch needed in the more atmospheric parts," Arjen said.

Rather than the explicit storyline you would expect in an AYREON release, the songs of GUILT MACHINE revolve around a central theme. Instead of looking outward into a world of fantasy or science fiction, the songs look inward, exploring the destructive psychology of guilt, regret and the darkest form of secret — the secrets we hide from ourselves.

"At first I asked my partner and personal manager Lori to quickly write scratch lyrics for one of the songs so I could record some guide vocals," Arjen said. "I was so impressed by what she produced that I asked her to write the lyrics for all the songs. I was unable myself to create the type of darkly enigmatic, open-ended lyrics I wanted for these songs, my specialty being sci-fi lyrics about sinister aliens. She definitely gave the songs an extra dimension with her lyrics, exorcising the demons we both had faced in the past few years. It’s also no secret that I’ve always been a big fan of her melodic guitar style, so she also plays all the guitar solos on this album."

Despite these differences, GUILT MACHINE still has much in common with AYREON. The songs are mainly long, "epic" tracks that feature dynamic contrasts between softer, dreamy sections and powerful, heavy passages. There are intricate harmonies, complex rhythms, soaring melodies, and an eclectic selection of instruments — all what you’d expect from an AYREON release.
