August 2008

Universal Music is delighted to announce the release of a new studio album from British rock legends Uriah Heep, ‘Wake the Sleeper,’ which is to be issued in the U.S. on 26th August 2008.

‘Wake The Sleeper’ is Uriah Heep’s first studio album in almost ten years (the first since 1998’s ‘Sonic Origami’) – and 21st studio album overall – and is set to herald an exciting new phase for the band.

The album sees Uriah Heep back to their very best and will undoubtedly become a future classic – sure to please their dedicated worldwide fan base and fans of progressive rock in general.  Recorded in 2007 the album was produced by Mike Paxman (Status Quo), and has thus far received rave reviews, as it was selected as ‘Album of the Month’ by Classic Rock Magazine (in their June issue), where it earned an 8/10 rating, and was called "A momentous return to form."

In the words of Heep guitarist, Mick Box, "We are delighted to be reunited with a major label in Universal music. ‘Wake The Sleeper’ is an album we are incredibly proud of, and one that we hope the fans will see as one of Uriah Heep’s best.  We can’t wait to get back out on the road to showcase the new songs."

The live arena has been vital to the longevity of Uriah Heep. So in addition to album sales of over 30 million worldwide, the band has toured in 52 countries, and in the process, established themselves as consummate live performers.  The band has a series of impressive firsts – including being the first British rock band to play Russia (in December 1987).

Uriah Heep’s progressive heavy metal made the British band one of the most popular hard rock groups of the early ’70s. Formed by guitarist Mick Box and vocalist David Byron in the late ’60s, Uriah Heep released their debut album, ‘Very ‘eavy…Very ‘umble’ in 1970. Since then, the band have released 20 studio albums and played to millions of fans across the globe. Uriah Heep remain one of British rocks most consistent and long-standing acts.

‘Wake the Sleeper’ is the band’s first album without their long-standing and original drummer, Lee Kerslake who sadly had to leave the band due to ill health in January 2007. Filling the drum stool for the very first time is the hugely well-respected Russell Gilbrook (Tony Iommi/Black Sabbath, Van Morrison, John Farnham, and Lonnie Donnegan).

Uriah Heep’s current line up is Mick Box – Guitar, Trevor Bolder – Bass, Phil Lanzon – Keyboards, Bernie Shaw – Lead Vocals, and Russell Gilbrook – Drums.

UB40’s Best Collected for New ‘Greatest Hits’ (Virgin/EMI)

For more than 25 years, UB40 has been one of the world’s premiere pop-reggae acts, with several international chart-topping singles and global sales totaling more than 70 million albums.  On September 30, Virgin/EMI will release UB40:

Greatest Hits, a new CD and digital collection of 21 hits and standout tracks spanning the influential group’s career.

Included on UB40: Greatest Hits are the group’s first #1 smash, 1984’s “Red Red Wine,” and their reggae-splashed hit versions of “Here I Am (Come and Take Me),” “(I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You,” and “The Way You Do The Things You Do.” Also included are two songs featuring The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde, “I Got You Babe” and “Breakfast In Bed.”

"Swing Low", the official anthem for the England rugby team’s triumphant

2003 World Cup campaign in Australia, was the group’s 49th UK chart single.

After many years performing live and developing a name for themselves, UB40’s fortunes changed at the beginning of 1980, when they were asked to support The Pretenders on a UK tour.  The cover art for UB40’s first album, released that year, was a reproduction of the UK’s unemployment benefit card, with the title Signing Off rubber-stamped in red. It referred to "signing off" the dole and getting a job, both an acknowledgement of the launch of the band and a celebration of their new status.

Because they were from the West Midlands and they were a large multicultural group playing music of Jamaican origin, UB40 were initially thought to be part of the two-tone music scene which had burst out of nearby Coventry. Rooted in Caribbean ska, rock steady and reggae, the two-tone style was popularized by Coventry bands including The Specials and The Selecter.  Signing Off made it clear that UB40 were not part of the two-tone movement. While they were part of the same social and political tendency, their musical approach was quite different.

Their sound was more relaxed, sophisticated and sultry.

In 1983, UB40 released the album Labour of Love, a direct tribute to the musicians who had inspired and influenced them. The phenomenally popular ‘Red Red Wine’ was the album’s first single, and it went straight to #1 on the UK charts upon its release, remaining on the British charts for two years. In 1984, the song became UB40’s first U.S. #1 and went on to be a worldwide hit for the group.

ARCTIC is preparing for another cross-country adventure – after a triumphant return from one tour this past June, the independent Vancouver-based band is ready to explore Canada for the second time this year.

The band itself is already as cross-Canadian as can be.  With the three members hailing from Yellowknife, NT, St. John’s, NF and Kelowna, BC, their diverse influences and experiences emerge from some of the furthest and most isolated corners of this country.  These influences combine in unexpected ways: progressive rock, jazz, industrial rock merge with ambient textures and acoustic singer/songwriter melodies to create something fresh, unconventional and intriguing that has been dubbed "acoustic trance", "psychedelic folk", and "Metric meets Neil Young".

ARCTIC was not originally supposed to be a band, and in fact was formed out of frontman Marcus Martin’s desire to never be in another band again. After a childhood spent on the land in the isolated Northwest Territories of Canada, the guitarist travelled to the metropolis of Toronto. Frustrated by the roller-coaster ride of band politics, he went solo, and headed west to Vancouver to write his own music. He began performing using a looping device that would allow him to record, modify, loop and layer his acoustic guitar performance into a haunting moodiness evocative of a cold Northern landscape. With a rich, unique sound that was already gaining an audience, he had no need for backing musicians.

But strong music always attracts interest and as time went on, others expressed a desire to join the project.  Kirsten Starcher, involved in the production of ARCTIC’s second EP, Today Brought Me Here, became the band’s bassist, keyboardist, and backing singer. In 2007 they were joined by Todd Biffard on drums, whose creative blend of acoustic and electronic percussion would round out the trio’s spacey sound.

More than just talented musicians, ARCTIC focuses on issues that go beyond the music itself, such as keeping their fans informed on environmental issues in the North (they recently auctioned off their CD master to support the World Wildlife Fund) and practicing responsible touring. "On our tour, we will be avoiding chain stores and restaurants wherever possible.  We prefer to support local independent stores, only eat at "mom & pop" places, and seek out used clothing."

As independent musicians, they are their own little ecosystem of the music industry.  They handle their own booking, licensing and production.  They personalize their own merchandise by hand-bleaching the band’s logo into each t-shirt and melting the band’s name into every CD – things that a major label could never undertake on a large scale.

Their road adventures are detailed in a tour blog on their site, which itself contains hidden paths and secrets for fans to explore.

Their CDs do not have printed booklets but are sold in minimalist clear cases with the band name embossed across the front.  For "Today Brought Me Here", they developed a Flash-based CD Cover Generator on their website, where fans can design and print their own booklet.  "Part of the rationale for this is that we realize that many people are going to buy, copy or download the tracks and mp3s, and they won’t need or want a printed booklet anyway.  It gives our fans a chance to engage with the music and packaging in a more interactive way."

"Arctic offer up some cool ambient and acoustic pop that fans of Radiohead and Elliot Smith should instantly dig. Actually, what Brought Me Here sounds like is a sane version of Thom Yorke’s The Eraser –- and that is meant to be a compliment because Arctic’s intense focus means better songs. " — Popjournalism

Brian Wilson & Capitol/EMI Partner with Gannett for Exclusive Album Premiere

Music legend Brian Wilson and Capitol Records / EMI are partnering with Gannett for an exclusive premiere of Wilson’s new album, That Lucky Old Sun.  From August 22 to September 1, more than 50 Gannett newspaper and TV station websites, including, will exclusively offer full streaming audio of Wilson’s new album before its September 2 release. The innovative promotion is the first of its kind for Gannett, which has never before partnered with an artist to offer an album premiere across its media Websites.

Visitors to select Gannett sites, including, 32 local Gannett newspaper websites and 19 local Gannett TV websites, will be able to listen to the full 38-minute album in sequence or skip ahead or back to individual tracks. The album will not be available for download from Gannett’s sites, but the streaming audio player will link directly to to pre-order the CD, limited edition CD/DVD and digital album.

While it is fairly common practice for artists to offer promotional pre-release web streaming of new music, it is a unique arrangement to stream an album on newspaper and TV websites. For Gannett, this is an opportunity to deliver new music from a respected artist familiar to its core news audience. Top Gannett markets were chosen for the web streams, some because of the size of the market, others because of a large Brian Wilson fan base.

“Streaming a full album is a first for Gannett, so we are thrilled to be working with Capitol Records and a musician of Brian Wilson’s stature to deliver music in a new way to our online audiences. This positions us well to expand our digital platforms while demonstrating the power of Gannett to deliver quality content across a network of websites,” said Jim Lenahan, strategic development manager for Gannett’s U.S. Community Publishing division.

Brian Wilson is one of popular music’s most deeply revered figures, a legendary writer, producer, arranger and performer of some of the most cherished music in rock history. For the release of his new studio album, That Lucky Old Sun, Wilson has returned to Capitol Records / EMI, his original label home. The new album will be released on CD, limited edition CD/DVD, and digitally on September 2 (September 1 internationally).  On August 19, the album is released as a limited edition 180-gram vinyl LP.

“This music is really special to me and I hope that everyone will enjoy it!,” says Brian Wilson.

A musical love letter from Southern California, That Lucky Old Sun shimmers with sun-dappled choruses and arrangements that swell and swirl as if carried by the Pacific tides.  Rolling Stone magazine has deemed it “Brian’s strongest new work in years,” and one of the album’s songs, “Midnight’s Another Day,” has been described by MOJO magazine as “glorious.” The album is narrated in transitional interludes spoken by Wilson as ‘That Lucky Old Sun,’ the storyteller. The narratives, cameos on life and the heartbeat of Los Angeles, propel the album’s musical story.

Wilson describes That Lucky Old Sun as an “interwoven series of ‘rounds’

with interspersed spoken word,” and as an autobiographical travelogue of sorts. The new studio album is produced by Wilson and was created with his acclaimed band at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, where he first recorded in 1962.

The new release is the dawning of a new California morning for Brian Wilson, continuing the awe-inspiring concept album journey that he first began four decades ago. Wilson’s songwriting, arranging and producing talents came together in harmonious glory for The Beach Boys’ 1966 classic, Pet Sounds, and have continued to evolve during his solo career, highlighted by his 2004 critically acclaimed Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE. Lyrically and in Wilson’s incomparably lush, evocative arrangements, That Lucky Old Sun adds a new chapter to Wilson’s conceptual presentations, reaching ever higher with his vibrant and moving autobiographical storytelling and intricate harmonies.

Following numerous nominations, Wilson won a well-deserved Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance (2004) for “Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow”

and he was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006. Last December, he was feted as a leading cultural icon by The Kennedy Center Honors alongside Diana Ross, Martin Scorsese, Steve Martin and Leon Fleisher.

Brian Wilson will tour with his band this fall, performing songs from That Lucky Old Sun and his classic hits.  For more information, please visit <> .

Tales of Colt 45 Tour with Cheeseburger

Well bully for you if you can answer yes to the two questions above—it means you’ll be able to thoroughly enjoy this summer’s fourth and final Tales of Colt 45 tour stop. We’re closing things out with one of our all-time favorite party bands: NYC’s own CHEESEBURGER, with special guests at every stop. It’s got the brand new track "Jellybean," (from their upcoming record on Kemado) plus a never-before-heard version of the party anthem "Saturday Night." And guess what? The damn thing is free, as in you don’t have to bother to steal it because we’ve already done that for you. Tantric’s "Down and Out" Approaching Top 5! On Tour All Summer

Louisville, KY rockers TANTRIC have another Top 10 single on their hands and are approaching Top 5! "Down and Out" jumped up to #7 on the BDS Active Rock Chart this week and continues to gain momentum as the song marches forward at all the Rock Radio formats. "Down and Out" is the first single off Tantric’s new record The End Begins, which is out now on Silent Majority Group/ILG. The End Begins debuted at #91 on the Billboard Top 200 in April.

A big Tantric shout out goes out to Tampa Bay Rays All-Star (and shoe in for Rookie Of The Year) Third Baseman, Evan Longoria for using "Down and Out" as his intro music each time he comes to bat at home games.

Background on Tantric: Tantric was formed by three former members of Days Of The New: Jesse Vest, Todd Whitener, and Matt Taul, with the addition of Merge singer, Hugo Ferreira. They were signed to Maverick Records in 1999, and recorded their self-titled debut with producer Toby Wright in 2000. The record was released in February 2001 and went platinum thanks to the strength of the single "Breakdown" and the band’s extensive touring with the likes of Kid Rock and Creed. Tantric’s second Wright produced album, After We Go, was released in February 2004, preceded by the single "Hey Now." Described as heavier than their first record, After We Go debuted at #56 on the Billboard 200. Between 2005 and 2007, Vest, Whitener and Taul all decided to move on from Tantric, leaving lead singer Hugo Ferreira to start the search for a new band. Ferreira enlisted former Fuel drummer Kevin Miller, Joe Pessia (guitarist Dramagods), Erik Leonhardt (bassist), and Marcus Ratzenboeck (electric violin) as new members of the band. Shortly thereafter, Tantric announced their deal with the Silent Majority Group record label, and their new management company, JHMP.

After trying out guitarists for several months, Society 1 has just announced they have found a new guitarist. Los Angeles native, Eric Franklin will be joining Matt ‘The Lord’ Zane, Dirt, and Sic Rik on guitars. You can view video of Eric Franklin in action at (

Raised by his parents on Beethoven, Bach and the Star Wars Soundtrack, guitarist Eric Franklin started his musical journey on the piano at age six. Taught by Juilliard graduate Emilia Guastella, Eric studied classical music for 6 years. By the age of 12 however, hearing the sounds of Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses and Led Zeppelin blast from his sister’s stereo, Eric eventually craved to learn music of a louder persuasion and his longing to play the guitar could not be stopped.

Eric’s first public show will be on Dave Navarro’s Spread Entertainment which will air Aug 8 on You can check out some exclusive footage here. Society 1 recently released “Live and Raw” exclusively through iTunes.
