PUNK LEGENDS D.O.A. ANNOUNCE 30th ANNIVERSARY TOUR!
Over the past thirty years D.O.A. have released 12 albums and sold one million copies during their storied career. Band Leader Joe Shithead Keithley has gone on to start his own label Sudden Death Records and, with members of D.O.A, started a side project called Band of Rebels. Keithley captured his musical history in his Canadian bestseller autobiography I, Shithead – A Life In Punk (Arsenal Pulp Press). In 2003, Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell declared December 21st to be "D.O.A. Day" in honor of the band’s 25th anniversary.
Keithley has teamed up with co-conspirators bassist Randy Rampage and drummer James Hayden to come up with a ton of great new songs for a new album to be released this summer. Bob Rock has produced albums for Metallica, Pointed Sticks, Young Canadians, Motley Crue, Cranberries, The Cult and many others. Bob Rock is producing D.O.A.’s 13th full length album Northern Avenger in time for their 30th anniversary.
What did the Canadian godfather of punk rock have to say about working with Rock? "Working with Bob Rock is fucking cool,” says Keithley. “D.O.A. and Bob go a long ways back to the early days of Vancouver’s punk rock scene. If there ever was a guy who can record a heavy sound, it’s Bob and D.O.A.’s a heavy band, so it bloody well makes sense!"
D.O.A. has always maintained an uncompromising anarchist populist political stance using the slogan "TALK – ACTION = 0". The band is known for its outspoken political opinions and has a history of performing for many causes and benefits. The band has been active on many issues, including anti-racism, anti-globalization, freedom of speech and the environment.
Thirty years later Joe Shithead Keithley and D.O.A. are still just as outspoken and continue to fuckin’ rock!

Blondie: ‘Parallel Lines’ 30th Anniversary Release & Tour
On June 24, Capitol/EMI will release an expanded 30th Anniversary Edition of Blondie’s Parallel Lines album, which has sold more than 20 million copies around the world since its 1988 debut. The commemorative CD/DVD release adds four bonus audio tracks, three classic music videos and a previously unreleased TV performance from the BBC’s “Top Of The Pops” to the album’s original tracklist, as well as a booklet containing the original album photo session.
Parallel Lines peaked at #6 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart and included Blondie’s first #1 hit, “Heart Of Glass,” named one of the greatest songs ever by Blender magazine. The iconic album also features the smash hit “One Way Or Another” as well as “Hanging On The Telephone” and “Sunday Girl.”
This summer, the legendary New York City icons and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees return to doing what they do best: hitting the road to sold-out performances across the U.S. and Europe on the band’s “Parallel Lines 30th Anniversary Tour.” Says Blondie’s Chris Stein, "We are looking forward to seeing new and old fans out there this summer. We have been doing pretty much the same show for several tours now, and this time we have more rehearsal time than usual and we’re going to try to take it a bit further."

CANDLEBOX Return With Their First New Album In 10 Years!
Candlebox make their triumphant return to the modern music game this summer with their first new record in ten years. INTO THE SUN will be released July 22nd on Silent Majority Group in conjunction with Warner Music Group’s Independent Label Group.
The original Candlebox songwriting team of singer Kevin Martin and guitarist Peter Klett along with original drummer Scott Mercado, reunited shortly before the 2006 Rhino/Warner Brothers retrospective, Best Of Candlebox was released. Candlebox’s 2008 lineup features 3 of the founding 4 members – Only bass player Bardi Martin has been replaced by Adam Kury. After being apart for more than 7 years, Martin and Klett discovered that the time and tide apart had nurtured enhanced chemistry and mutual personal evolution that has now manifested in a cache of new songs that leave their past works, for lack of a better phrase, far behind.
INTO THE SUN was produced by Ron Aniello (Barenaked Ladies, Lifehouse) engineered by Cliff Norrell (REM, Henry Rollins) & mixed by Norrell and Mike Shipley (Nickelback, Def Leppard). Kevin Martin (Vocals) and Peter Klett (Guitar) Scott Mercado (DRUMS) and Adam Kury (BASS) have come together to make a bold, eclectic mix of rhythms and textures that will make long-time Candlebox fans mouth’s water and has the potential to vault this band back into the national spotlight. Remember, this is a band that’s sold over Six Million albums in the US alone.
INTO THE SUN Confirmed Tracklisting:

Statements from Candlebox band members:
Kevin Martin, Vocals:
“I really feel this is our best work to date, seemed like old times in the studio and I really enjoyed making this record. When we started writing the songs for this record back in ’07 I think we all felt like we were on to something special. I think you can hear that in the songs, they just speak to you like an old friend you haven’t seen in years but are so happy to be able to catch up with.”
Peter Klett, Guitar:
“Making this record reminded me of the first album – we didn’t feel that we needed to find the sound, it was there and the goal was to capture it in the recording. I feel we did that and more…it was nice to end up with some live, off the cuff, recordings such as the intro to breathe….it was one of those moments that just happens…all of us in the same room feeding off one another….very exciting to feel that again.”
Scott Mercado, Drums:
“Without a doubt, Candlebox fans are the most loyal and greatest fans in the whole world. I can’t wait to hear what they think!”

Sean Ashby Cd release & East Coast tour
*CD RELEASE PARTIES HIT THE EAST COAST IN JUNE
“Most of Sean Ashby’s guitar playing has been decorative, which befits a sideman who is best known for dressing up Sarah McLachlan’s songs. It’s taught him a lot about colour and texture and to be sympathetic (or respond) to a song’s needs. That has stood him well on a solo album that is much more visceral with songs that are direct pop-rock ("Dreamin,’" "This Machine") or moody and atmospheric ("Come to Me") but always melodic even when approaching AC/DC volume ("Star 98"). He sings well, too.” Grade: B – Tom Harrison, The Province
“All I Need” Sean Ashby – “Ashby, aka Sarah McLaughlan’s axeman, goes solo and his grungy rockers are grads of the VanCity school which turned out Art Bergman, Matt Good and Sons Of Freedom. However it’s Sean’s time with the Grapes Of Wrath/ Ginger that nips at the tail of this track built around a slippery slide guitar.” – William McGuirk, News Durham Region
“On this, his solo debut, he emerges as a rock singer-songwriter with a knack for melody and infectious riffs….Stylistic reference points here range from the Foo Fighters to Coldplay to Nick Drake and such eclecticism is refreshing in this era of one-dimensional artists.” – Kerry Doole, Exclaim
“The album displays Ashby’s guitar expertise by combining grungy tunes with acoustic singer/songwriter ballads…driven by radio-friendly, up-tempo rock tunes like “Star 98" and “Baby Yes”. Ashby continues to grow as a solo performer” -Jon Brazeau, Spill Magazine
“The title track is a brilliant example of Ashby’s bare bones acoustic production, where he allows a single snare drum hit or a fling of a cymbal in spots to help build the emotional tug of the song. Again he displays this style in two other outstanding highlights, found in the slow exotic build up on “Dance Upon My Grave” and the sure fire pop hit “Nova Girl”. – Jason Gladu, PopJournalism
Ashby is hitting the road with Delerium in May and then returning this summer to tour Brass and Gold across Canada

ASIA to Perform Debut Album Live in SF
The acclaimed British progressive rock group ASIA has announced an historic, first-time-ever live performance of the band’s multi-platinum self-titled 1982 debut album to take place at the band’s U.S. tour-closing May 5 concert at San Francisco’s Grand Ballroom at The Regency Center. ASIA is touring to more than 20 cities across the U.S. this spring to support the April 15 release of Phoenix, the band’s first studio album since 1983 with its original ‘supergroup’ line-up, which debuted at #73 last week on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart.
The San Francisco concert’s first set will include classic tracks from ELP, The Buggles, King Crimson and Yes, plus a selection of acoustic tracks and songs from ASIA’s 1983 album, Alpha, and from Phoenix. The second set will present ASIA’s first album, 1982’s ASIA, from beginning to end, the first time the band has ever performed the album live in its entirety. ASIA was the world’s best-selling album in 1982, and it is further distinguished as one of only four albums that have spent nine or more weeks in the coveted #1 position on Billboard’s chart.
Next week, QuickTime will launch an exclusive ‘Make Your Own ASIA Video’ contest at www.quicktime.com. Custom ASIA art elements are provided to participants at the site to produce their own music videos for “An Extraordinary Life,” a new track from Phoenix. One grand prize winner will receive a Steve Howe Edition Gibson ES-175 guitar and an Apple MacBook Air, custom laser etched with Roger Dean artwork.
On May 19, XM Satellite Radio will premiere its new “ASIA: Artist Confidential” special. The exclusive performance and interview special is scheduled to air throughout the day (repeats back-to-back) on XMX (Channel 2), XM’s Exclusive Music Series and Originals channel, and at 10pm ET/7pm PT on Fine Tuning (Channel 76).
Released on CD and digitally by EMI America Records in North America and by Frontiers Records internationally, Phoenix’s debut has been accompanied by several high-profile online, radio and retail initiatives with partners including Amazon.com, J&R Music World, Jones Radio Networks, QuickTime, SyncLive.com, VH1Classic.com, and XM Satellite Radio. The album’s #73 debut is ASIA’s highest Billboard chart position in the SoundScan era, and in a recent review of the new album, The Associated Press raved “ASIA is back and better than ever.”
Formed at the dawn of the MTV era, ASIA was the first ‘supergroup’ of the 1980s, featuring members from Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, King Crimson and The Buggles. Videos made for the band’s first two albums, ASIA and Alpha, were staples of the historic music channel’s initial programming.
ASIA’s four original members reunited in 2006, 23 years after all four had last played together. The much publicized reunion resulted in two highly successful world tours in 2006 and 2007; an acclaimed double live LP and DVD (Fantasia: Live In Tokyo); and an overwhelming response from fans and the media, which continues today. ASIA has sold more than 15 million albums around the world, and this will be the third world tour for the four accomplished musicians, whose debut album, ASIA, was released 26 years ago in 1982 and remains one of only four albums in history to hold the #1 Billboard album chart position for a staggering nine weeks.
Phoenix marks a return to the band’s classic sound, with some surprising contemporary twists. “Everything that was there 25 years ago is still there, and quite simply, if you liked it then, you’ll love it now,” says ASIA’s singer and bassist John Wetton. “It does exactly what it says on the tin.” Adds guitarist Steve Howe, “I believe we’ve all found the teamwork creatively rewarding and we also look forward to playing some new songs onstage.”
Phoenix is a collection of songs that speak to the millions of core ASIA fans who, like the group, have come a long way since the dawn of the MTV age in 1982. “We’re older now, and our audience has grown up with us,” says drummer Carl Palmer. “I think the lyrical themes on this record are some of the best John has ever developed.”
Phoenix has a very poignant underlying theme placed at the intersection of love, discovery and reflection, no doubt due, at least partly, to Wetton’s unexpected serious health issues (which included open heart surgery), and forced the cancellation of ASIA’s 2007 West Coast North American tour and a sold-out tour of the UK. Fortunately, Wetton has recovered fully and his band mates say he is singing and playing better than ever.
“John is a survivor,” says ASIA keyboardist Geoff Downes. “He has proved that a few times now. There was never any doubt in our minds that he would recover and be better than ever. We all look forward to hitting the road once again.”
Capitol/EMI to Release ‘Day Of The Eagle: The Best Of Robin Trower’
Powerhouse guitarist Robin Trower is an English rock legend, often compared to Jimi Hendrix for his playing style. Day Of The Eagle: The Best Of Robin Trower, a new CD and digital collection of his best material from 1973 to 1980, including album tracks and live recordings, will be released July 8 by Capitol/EMI.
Robin Trower was the guitarist for Procol Harum from 1967 until 1971, when he left the group to pursue a solo career. His debut album Twice Removed From Yesterday was released in 1973 and was followed by 1974’s Bridge Of Sighs (reissued by Capitol/EMI in 2007). Bridge Of Sighs peaked at #7 on Billboard’s albums chart, launching Trower to new heights of arena rock stardom. Throughout the 1970s, Trower released several successful albums and toured to many of the world’s largest venues.
Trower’s solo releases showcase his emotional, blues-based guitar style and his trio, which included singer and bassist James Dewar and drummer Bill Lordan. Dewar and Lordan’s playing complemented Trower’s evocative, intricate guitar in a line-up that has been compared to Jimi Hendrix’s late ‘60s Experience trio. While Trower’s style is inspired in part by Hendrix’s distinct and revolutionary approach, the most direct comparison to be made is not in technical style, but rather in the bared emotion and power of both guitarists’ playing, as well as in their shared affinity for the Fender Stratocaster.
The ‘80s brought collaborations with Bryan Ferry and ex-Cream bassist and vocalist Jack Bruce, and in the ‘90s, Procol Harum reunited to release a new album. Now in his fourth decade of performing and recording, Trower has continued to work with Ferry, while also releasing his own albums and touring. Trower’s most recent studio album, Another Days Blues, was released in 2005.

SABRINA KORVA Releases Debut at NXNE
21-year-old Sabrina Korva was performing at age 7, on stage singing a duet with Bryan Adams at 13 and co-writing with successful hit makers throughout her teens. This stylish singer/songwriter is about to release her debut EP Hold Onto Myself with songs produced by Jim Huff (Edwin, Headstones), Mike K, CJ Eiriksson (Matchbox 20, Rob Zombie), and Michael Raphael (NEVE).
The title track “Hold Onto Myself” is one of Korva’s favorites. “It’s the most fun to play live. It’s basically about someone who’s completely lost their soul and control of their life. It’s a topical theme I think everyone’s seen at some point.” “Suffocated” was the first song Korva wrote with songwriter/guitarist/producer Jim Huff. “The chorus was one of those magical ones that write themselves,” says Korva, “it was literally one of us playing the guitar, him singing the first line of the chorus, then both of us singing the rest of it together. For the first time, we both heard the exact same thing at the same moment, it was just meant to be.”
In addition to the incredible producers and songwriters that contributed to her new EP, Korva has worked with Todd Kerns (Static In Stereo, Age Of Electric), Chin Injetti (Snow, Moka Only), Mark Olexson (Matt Good, 54-40), Dean Truitt (Color), Riche Zahniser (SouthBase), Curt Cuomo (KISS, Eddie Money, John Corabi), Kelly Moneymaker (Expose, Days Of Our Lives), Jason Rowe, Derek Schram (Juice), Sean Kelly (Crash Kelly), MOBILE and Gary Slayton.
Although Korva is greatly influenced by classic rockers Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Queen, Heart, AC/DC, Guns n Roses and Bon Jovi, she studied classical piano (and some jazz) for 10 years at The Royal Conservatory Of Music. With determination Korva also juggled high school, figure skating, ballet, voice lessons, flute, bass and guitar. Recently graduating from BCIT’s Radio Broadcasting program, working on air at Evolution 107.9 FM and attending festivals like Canadian Music Week for many years, she is learning the behind the scenes music business to prepare for her career.
Korva’s songwriting style has progressed over the years. “I started out writing pop in my teens, then I got into classic rock and wrote a lot of punky rock songs, and of course went through a metal writing phase,” says Korva “now I’m writing a lot of pop/rock again. My style has always been influenced by writers I’ve worked with and whatever music I’m listening to at the time, so now it’s just a mix, and I’m more versatile. I love writing, music and melodies especially."
A regular performer at CrueFest in Hollywood at the Whisky A-Go-Go, Korva has played venues throughout North America, from Kentucky to Nashville to Sunset Strip in Hollywood and back to Vancouver and Toronto. She is now gearing up for her first showcase at the North By North East festival in Toronto, June 12-15th 2008. Date, Time & Venue TBC. Also playing Vancouver on May 8th at Hokos.
Billy Idol Records New Songs for Capitol/EMI Release: ‘The Very Best Of Billy Idol: Idolize Yourself’
Billy Idol has recorded two brand new songs for The Very Best Of Billy Idol: Idolize Yourself, a new career-spanning CD, Deluxe Edition CD/DVD and digital collection to be released June 24 by Capitol/EMI. The two songs, “John Wayne” and “New Future Weapon,” will be exclusively available on the new release, which features all seven of Idol’s Top 10 hits among its 18 tracks, including two #1s. The Deluxe Edition adds 13 music videos making their DVD release debuts, including two alternate video edits that have never before been released in any format. The CD and CD/DVD packages are both designed by Shepard Fairey and include liner notes by David Wild.
The Very Best Of Billy Idol: Idolize Yourself gathers together the music that Billy Idol has taken to stages all around the world, as well as two brand new songs. The new tracks find the man still at the peak of his powers, working with longtime partner and guitar great Steve Stevens and his other current band members, drummer and songwriting collaborator Brian Tichy and keyboardist Derek Sherinian. On June 24, Idol will perform songs from the new release on the outdoor stage of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
Of his new song “John Wayne,” Idol says, “When I’m singing it, I’m thinking about the characters John Wayne played. They were usually men with a flaw in their character or something dark in their past they’re trying to rise above before the end of the movie. So it’s not about the kick-in-the-door John Wayne or the barroom fight John Wayne — it’s more the man who overcomes.”
Of the collection’s other new track, “New Future Weapon,” Idol says, “I was reading about the new stealth fighter plane the Raptor, and I was struck by the ambivalence of the pilot talking about the enemy. Musically, it’s got a bit of the Spaghetti Western about it. It’s a sick song, as you might expect.”
The two new songs are produced by Josh Abraham, whose production discography includes Velvet Revolver’s double platinum, Grammy Award-winning Contraband, 30 Seconds To Mars’ platinum A Beautiful Lie, Staind’s eight-times platinum Break The Cycle and double platinum 14 Shades of Grey, Limp Bizkit’s seven-times platinum Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, and Courtney Love’s America’s Sweetheart, among many others.
The Deluxe Edition CD/DVD adds 13 music videos that helped forever define Idol as a rock icon, including previously unreleased edits of “Cradle Of Love” and “Hot In The City.” “We worked hard so there would be some consistency to the videos and so we wouldn’t have to be embarrassed one day,” Idol says. “We sweated over them – video hell, we would call it.” As with his vital music, Idol liked to use his videos to shake things up as much as possible. “That was a pretty bland time of corporate rock and afternoon television music, and we wanted to bring in a little more danger and after hours fun into it,” he explains. “Maybe that’s why we looked like vampires.”
Part of the Bromley Contingent of early Sex Pistols fans, Billy Idol was inspired to front the popular British punk band Generation X from 1976 until the band’s break-up in 1981. From there, he decided to try his luck in America. “I definitely took punk with me wherever I’ve gone,” Idol says. “That was the whole idea really. I wanted to transform my music, but I didn’t want to ever lose sight of that punk rock attitude. Whether we turned to hard rock or disco or whatever the hell else we did over the years, that helped give the music a spirit it would not have had if I hadn’t come out of the punk movement.”
Idol’s first solo album was released by Chrysalis in 1982, but it didn’t hit its chart peak until the following year. The self-titled album’s “White Wedding” and “Dancing with Myself” (a new version of a song Idol first recorded with Generation X) were major club hits in 1983, fueled by heavy video play on MTV. “White Wedding” also crossed over to the Top 5 of the Mainstream Rock chart, while “Hot In the City” made the Top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100, and Billy Idol was certified gold with U.S. sales totaling more than 500,000 units.
Idol really smashed through with his 1984 double platinum album, Rebel Yell. Stocked with major radio and MTV hits, including “Rebel Yell,” “Eyes Without a Face,” “Flesh For Fantasy” and “Catch My Fall,” the album reached #6 on the Billboard 200.
1987’s platinum-selling Vital Idol collection presented his hits in expanded remixes, including the chart-topping smash “Mony, Mony;” that same year, Idol released a new album, the platinum Top 10 Whiplash Smile, with its standout singles “To Be A Lover” and “Don’t Need A Gun.” The platinum-certified Charmed Life album followed in 1990 with “Cradle Of Love” and “L.A. Woman.” 1993’s Cyberpunk included the Top 10 Mainstream Rock hit “Shock To The System.” A platinum-selling Greatest Hits collection, released in 2000, re-charged Idol’s catalog, and 12 years after his last new album release, he returned with Devil’s Playground in 2005 (Sanctuary). The album’s “World Comin’ Down” is included in the new collection’s tracks.
“It’s funny what you have to do to carve out your own niche,” Idol says with a laugh when asked about the new collection’s Idolize Yourself title. “But everyone should idolize themselves, shouldn’t they?” The niche that Billy Idol has created over these past few decades is no laughing matter. Beyond the platinum sound and the platinum hair, Idol is respected as the original punk rocker who long ago found a way to take that sneering punk attitude to the top of the charts.
Listening back to The Very Best Of Billy Idol: Idolize Yourself, the man himself felt a real sense of pride. “I was knocked out,” Idol says. “For all the up and downs, there’s some quality there. So I feel like I can walk into my house justified. The highs were very high — sometimes too high — and the lows were low, but somehow it still holds up.”
