I’m Alive

2007, Frontiers Records/Zink Music

Rating: 2.5/5

Kelly Keagy is the singer/drummer from the melodic rock act Night Ranger, and since the band is busy with a new studio and live album, Keagy takes the opportunity to release his second studio album. This time Keagy has written and produced the album with label mate Jim Peterik (ex- Survivor, Pride of Lions). The album is also jammed with guests appearances, including < ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Reb Beach (Whitesnake, Winger, The Mob) amongst many others. < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

With thought to what label Keagy’s releasing his album on, you can pretty much guess what type of music this album is. Yes, it’s melodic rock and nothing else. Luckliy, Keagy didn’t focus on the keyboards; instead, he’s focusing on a harder approach with the guitars in the frontline, which is something that really benefits the sound a lot. Keagy does not only sing on the album. He plays drums, guitar, and sings background vocals. Peterik is in charge of the guitar, bass, keyboards, and the background vocals, and Beach helps out with the lead guitar parts.

I’M ALIVE has 13 tracks, and unfortunately the quality of the material varies quite a lot. All of the melodic rock tracks sound pretty much alike, and it wouldn’t have hurt to have narrowed down the album with a few songs in favor of higher quality material.

The album works best when it comes to the sharper guitar-based songs like “I’m Alive”, “Stolen”, “World before and After” where Reb Beach shows off what a genius he is on the guitar. Other tracks worth mentioning are “Life Worth Remembering”, “Re-Imagine”, and “Where The Roads Ends”.

The dullest moment of the album is “Where Are We Now”. It doesn’t fit into the scope of the album in the slightest; the only thing saving it from a total meltdown is Keagy’s extraordinary voice. You can really tell that Peterik was involved in the songwriting, because many of the songs sound a lot like Pride of Lions’ left over songs. Unfortunately, the material doesn’t convince me, and even though there are a few great tracks they can’t help the outcome of the album being a bit poor. I’M ALIVE doesn’t give any lasting impression once you taken it out of the CD player and I guess that it’s going to disappear in the flood of albums that are constantly being released on the market.
