This is a single live DVD shot during the Paper Blood Tour at the Music Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2005. A few new members have joined the band, like the Swedish guitar player Marcus and the Swedish bass player Per.
The stage is extremely big – almost too big for the front trio. Beside the stage there are two flags with the cover artwork from PAPER BLOOD on them. The lighting is great; no one stands in the dark during the show. The sound is also brilliant. There are 7 cameras perfectly filming the show with nice cuts and slim transitions between shots. It wouldn’t have hurt to have more shots of the audience, though. Royal Hunt seems to have a great time on stage; even though the crowd is seated, after an hour they’re on their feet – something the band worked hard to do. Besides the 16 songs, the band also plays a few solos; Andersen and Jidell have a long duel on their instruments, which is fun to see.
Unfortunately, Royal Hunt’s performance drags down the rating. They do a great job, but when the show is over the guys aren’t even sweaty and you wonder if they have really given everything they’ve got. Imagine if the band gave their absolute everything: this DVD would be a jackpot. There almost isn’t any bonus material except for short interviews with the members and a few shots from Denmark, which I find a little cheap.
2006 Live by Royal Hunt is a fun DVD filled with ass-kicking symphonic/progressive hardrock/metal music and highly talented musicians, but unfortunately the DVD can’t get a much higher rating than the one above. It would take a little more effort from the band to make this DVD reach its full potential. It’s a treat for the hardcore fans, but for the more picky fans I’m not sure this is the best Royal Hunt item ever.
