Pride of Lions – Live In Belgium

Pride Of Lions
Live In Belgium

2006, Frontiers Records/Zink Music
Rating: 3.0/5

Jim Peterik (Survivor) and Toby Hitchcock certainly are fast at releasing albums; they have released 2 studio albums and 2 MCD’s since 2003. Right now they’re about to launch their brand-new double-disc CD LIVE IN BELGIUM which also includes a separate live DVD (in case you can’t get enough of Pride of Lions).

This is in fact the duo’s first live performance on European soil, and as usual they deliver their ordinary keyboard-based melodic rock / light melodic hardrock with the main focus on both Mr. Peterik and Mr. Hitchcock’s lead vocals.

The first disc is the actual performance recorded in Belgium where they played 14 songs, 5 of them taken from the first album. The second disc contains 7 studio songs at about 30 minutes total. The bonus track “Black Ribbons (Voices of the World)” is featured for everyone that didn’t buy the EP. Of the 7 songs, there are only two that are a bit faster, and those are “Reckless Love” and “So Deadly”; the rest of the material consists of ballads, which are pretty much the band’s signature song style. Pride of Lions sounds a little harder live compared to their studio efforts, which is a good thing. It says in the bio that they were nervous to go on stage, but it’s not apparent when listening to the album.

Something that really drags down the rating is the cut in between the songs. The audience fades out and there’s a cut to the next song. That’s something that both drags down the rating and destroys a lot of the live feeling when you listen to it.

Pride of Lions is too melodic for my taste but if you’re into melodic rock/ light melodic hardrock you may like it. If you can’t get enough of them, buy the live DVD too. This experience is as standard as their albums and again they only get a standard rating. When are they going to give me a real musical experience, I wonder?
