Toto – Falling In Between

Falling In Between

Frontiers Records/Zink Music
Released 2006
Rating: 2.0/5

Toto is maybe most known to the masses for their monster hits “Africa”, “Hold The Line”, and “Rosanna”, and was founded 30 years ago by Jeff Porcaro, David Paich, Steve Lukather, David Hungate and Bobby Kimball.

FALLING IN BETWEEN is the legendary act’s 18th album, and was released at the beginning of this year. Musically, Toto lies in the same genre as Survivor, Journey, and Foreigner, and FALLING IN BETWEEN claims to be a mix of their classical albums IV and THE SEVENTH ONE. Hopefully you readers are more familiar about what Toto’s albums have sounded like, because I only followed the band from a distance.

The remaining original members are Steve, David and Bobby and on this album they have gathered a bunch of familiar names. Steve Joseph, one of the old Toto singers, does a duet with Steve Lukather, and Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) is also guesting.

The strongest songs in my opinion are “Falling in Between” and “Taint Your World” – two tracks that are a bit edgier and heavier compared to the rest of the album. “Dying on My Feet”, “King of the World”, “Hooked”, “Let It Go” and “No End in Sight” are, from what I can figure out, pretty standard Toto tracks with great choirs, keyboards, and progressive influences. There are three ballads that all are potential hit threats: “Bottom of Your Soul”, “Simple Life” and “Spiritual Man”.

This album has its moments but at the end of the day it’s nothing other than a standard Toto production. The band should be given credit for honouring their music and staying true to the original but on the other hand this is not going to gain the band any new fans.

Steve Lukather – guitars, vocals
David Paich – keyboards, vocals
Greg Phillinganes – keyboards, vocals
Mike Porcaro – bass
Simon Phillips – drums
