Jeff Scott Soto – Essential Ballads

Jeff Scott Soto
Essential Ballads

Frontiers Records/Zink Music
Released 2006
Rating: 1.5/5

Even though Jeff Scott Soto has an amazing voice and manages to sing almost anything, I wonder what he has gotten himself into on this ballad album. I refuse to believe that JSS came up with the idea of doing a ballad album by himself – someone must have tricked him into it.

Just as the title says, this is strictly a ballad album. The bio says that this is an excellent way of getting to know JSS’s softer side. To make this compilation more attractive he’s put three bonus tracks on it. JSS has released three solo albums and 2 EPs, and I don’t think so few albums motivates an entire collection of ballads. There are 16 songs on ESSENTIAL BALLDS, including a cover of the Journey track “Send Her My Love”. All of the songs are re-mastered and the album has a 70-minute total playing time.

It’s really boring to hear ballads one after the other. The only thing that’s OK with the album is JSS’s voice, and I can’t imagine that he’s going to expand his success any wider with this boooooring album. I’m sorry to say that this is not what I expected a singer as amazing as JSS to release, and I’m pretty sure I’m never going to listen to ESSENTIAL BALLADS again.
