February 2006

The surviving members of Alice In Chains are regrouping for at least one live performance and perhaps many more, according to the band’s publicist. The group has confirmed its appearance at the Nova Rock festival in Austria in mid-June, with more dates in Europe and North America being discussed. It has not yet been revealed who will sing lead vocals for the group. William DuVall, a member of Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell’s solo touring band, will take the mic on March 10th when the group appears on a taping of the VH1 show, Decades Rock Live. It is not clear if DuVall will join Alice In Chains for any other appearances.

DuVall has performed Alice In Chains songs on tour with Cantrell, who told us that he was impressed with the way DuVall handled the material: “William’s really a great singer, and he really did that stuff well. There are not too many cats that pull that stuff off, and he’s one of the few that can. Very talented guy.”

Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez and drummer Sean Kinney performed together for the first time in nine years at a February 18th, 2005 tsunami relief benefit in Seattle, Washington, playing with several different singers. Alice In Chains vocalist Layne Staley died in April of 2002.

The Nova Rock show will also feature Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Tool, Queens Of The Stone Age, Avenged Sevenfold, Hard-Fi and more.

The Decades Rock Live taping, which will take place at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey, is a tribute to Seattle rockers Heart. A spring air date is expected to be announced soon.

OVERLOAD to head back into the studio
Detroit USA’s Overloaded has released brand new t shirts bearing the slogan “Heavy Metal Highway”.  The t shirts were designed by famous German artist Rainer Kalwitz.  The T shirts can be purchased for $20 (domestic us) and $25 (rest of world) paypal to detkluiber@yahoo.com
Hail the Kingdom and Hellfire cd’s are both almost sold out entirely due in no small part to a large quantity purchase by Metal Mayhem Records out of Connecticut USA.  The last remaining copies can be purchased on www.cdbaby.com
Overloaded is currently raising money for the recording of their next ep.  The band hopes to be back in the studio by June at the very latest.
The new ep will be anywhere from 5-8 songs including a re-recorded version of “Feeling Overloaded” from Hail the Kingdom and a speed metal cover of “Crazy Horses” which was originally recorded by the Osmonds in 1972.

GRADY Line-Up Change
Well, it’s official. Chris “Whip” Layton has left GRADY.  Unfortunately he had so many other projects going on, that he no longer had enough time to commit to GRADY on a full time basis.  We wish him all the best with his future endeavours and remain good friends.
Our new fulltime drummer is Billy Maddox.  Billy is well known as a member of Alien Love Child and Eric Johnson. He’s a badass!!!  Make sure to come and check him out at our gig at The Continental on Friday February 24th.
With the change in drummers, we are now looking to go into the studio April/May to record a new CD. So stay tuned for more info on that.
On February 7th and 8th we shot a video for “Woman Got My Devil” out at Willie Nelson’s 1800’s western town in Luck, Texas.  Produced by Michael Maxxis, it was directed by David Hogan.  David has a video resume that is out of this world. Highlights are Melissa Etheridge, Cheryl Crow, Steve Miller, Bob Seger, Fishbone, Prince, Waylon Jennings, The Judds, Alabama, Kenny Rogers, Shania Twain, Chet Atkins and Mark Knofler, Ronnie Milsap, Bonnie Raiit, Shedaisy, k.d.lang w/ Loretta Lynn, Brenda Lee and Kitty Wells, Big and Rich, Gretchen Wilson, to name a few.  Our star was WitchBaby from The Rhinestone Cowgirls with cameo appearances from some of the other Lonestar Rollergirls.  We had an absolute blast making it, and are awaiting the rough cut as we speak.  It should be complete by the beginning of March.
SXSW is coming up quick.  GRADY will be showcasing on Sat/March 18th at 9:00PM at The Dirty Dog Bar on 6th Street.
Around Austin we’ll be teaming up with our buddies in Broken Teeth to put on a series of shows at Redrum, The Backroom, Antones and The Red Eye Fly.  So keep an eye on the shows page for those.
Our sympathies and best wishes go out to our brothers in Honky who apparently had a run in with some redneck cops in Florida a couple of days ago.  Safe travels boys…
Come back an see ole GRADY some time

MTM have signed MOTHERS FINEST for their new live record. Mother’s Finest became a big influence for artists such as Living Colour, Prince, Van Halen, Melissa Etheridge and did tours with various acts such as The Who, P-Funk, Aerosmith, Earth, Wind & Fire, AC/DC, Marvin Gaye, Black Sabbath, The Commodores, Lynyrd Skynyrd as well as Chaka Khan.
With the experience of three successful decades of pure energy and all their classics, Mother’s Finest prove on this album that they still know how to rock. This concert, recorded by the SWR at the Villa Berg in Stuttgart, Germany in December 2004, captures the incredible live spirit of a real rock legend and offers the opportunity to experience and relive this unique evening. The CD also features four brand-new songs in finest funk rock tradition – produced in collaboration with the Swedish group Clawfinger, Vernon Reid and Omar Hakim.

When you melt R&B, rock, funk and heavy metal you get a sound that is provocative, passionate and highly explosive: MOTHERS FINEST, a band known for its cutting edge music and inimitable live performance.

In the beginning of 2005, after completion of the second “Section A” album and his third all instrumental release, the Danish guitarist Torben Enevoldsen, began writing some new material. The style came to be very melodic hard rock with a hard hitting edge. Mats Levén, who has worked with TREAT, SWEDISH EROTICA, AT VANCE, THERION, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, was picked for the singer job and his performance on this debut album is amazing to say the least! Daniel Flores of XSAVIOR, MIND’S EYE, SPEEDY GONZALES, FARO, PHILIP BARDOWELL did a great job on the drums, keeping a steady and hard rocking groove throughout. FATAL FORCE was produced by Tommy Hansen, who has worked with Helloween, Jorn Lande, TNT, Pretty Maids etc.,

It is my sad duty to confirm the news that drummer Rod Morgenstein’s wife Michelle has just lost her battle with breast cancer. All thoughts and prayers from us here at Metal-Rules and the Rock world go out to Rod, his family and friends at this sad time. R.I.P Michelle Morgenstein.

Lisa Marie Presley marries guitarist
Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of rock ‘n’ roll king Elvis Presley, has married guitarist and music producer Michael Lockwood in a ceremony in Kyoto, Japan, her publicist said Thursday.

Presley, 38, and Lockwood exchanged vows in a traditional Japanese ceremony Jan. 22, spokesman Paul Bloch said. It was Presley’s fourth marriage. She was previously married to Nicolas Cage, Michael Jackson and Danny Keough, who is the father of her two children.

The bride’s mother, actress Priscilla Presley, walked her daughter down the aisle and gave her away, Bloch said.

Daughter Riley Keough was maid of honour and son Benjamin Keough was a groomsman. The best man was Presley’s first husband, Danny Keough.

Also attending the wedding were Lockwood’s parents, Vivian and William Lockwood.

Lockwood was Presley’s musical director and is listed as executive producer on her 2005 album, Now What. Presley lives in the Los Angeles area but Bloch said he didn’t know where the couple plans to live.

Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello told RollingStone.com this week that the band is “about halfway done” with the recording of its third album, echoing what singer Chris Cornell told us on Monday (February 13th) when he said that the recording process had become “faster and more efficient.” Cornell also said that working with producer Brendan O’Brien has made a huge difference this time around: “Me personally, I’ve only used him to mix records, so working with him as a producer is really incredible. It’s very different than any way that I’ve ever done it. He’s making everything sound fantastic. The process is a little bit how we write things; we don’t overthink things, you know, we do what we’re inspired to do right then on the spot, he captures it and we move on. And it’s sounding phenomenal to me.”

O’Brien worked as a producer with Rage Against The Machine, the group featuring Morello and fellow Audioslave members Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk, but only mixed albums from Cornell’s first band, Soundgarden.

Audioslave’s first two records were produced by Rick Rubin.

The yet-to-be-titled new disc will follow up 2005’s Out Of Exile and is tentatively due out in June.

London, Ontario band Abandoned Souls will be performing during Canadian Music Week as part of Scene Magazine’s London Music Awards Showcase at The Social (1100 Queen St. West, Toronto) on Thursday, March 2nd, 2006 at 11:10pm. This year the band is nominated for Best New Artist/Band and Best Metal Band.

Abandoned Souls brings you a heavy sound influenced by bands like Black Sabbath, Nine Inch Nails and Tool.  Their music has thundering rhythms, crunchy guitars and powerful melodic vocals, which forms a heavy driven sound that could even infect your soul.

Abandoned Souls features John Ransom on vocals, Derek DeKort on guitar, James Todd on bass, and Tom Dobrentey on drums. The band formed in late 2004 and L.A. based recording engineer/producer Jay Ruston (Desmond Child, American Idol season 4) offered to produce and mix their debut album.

Circle of Shadows is a 10-song hard rock album that pays its respects at the altar of rock & roll through decadent honesty.  Abandoned Souls music is not afraid to stand on its own and lead the way to a new dawn. There is no doubt that this band will challenge your ears and you will be asking for more.

Power pop/rock band Tacoma Redd is gearing up for their first Canadian Music Week showcase on Friday March 3rd at 10pm at the Crowbar.  The band will be putting the finishing touches on their debut EP A Momentary Misfortune, this month as they master the six songs produced by Moe Berg (The Pursuit of Happiness).

“We’re extremely excited to have the opportunity to perform at Canadian Music Week 2006.  CMW has always been a great experience and a band can’t help but get excited at the possibility of showcasing to so many industry people and other cool bands from all over the place,” says frontman Doug Smart.

Tacoma Redd whose influences include Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World, Doughboys, Husker Du, Cheap Trick and AFI  features Smart on vocals, Bryan Richards on guitar, Chris Bell on bass and Dean Glover on drums.  Although formed in late 2003, it was 2005 where things started to happen for Tacoma Redd.  Last year saw the band secure management, hooking up with Berg for their first recording and landing on the same shows as Billy Idol, Bif Naked, The Illuminati and Robin Black.

The band is hoping to catch the attention of labels, distributors, agents and publishers at the festival taking place in Toronto March 2-4.  Never a band to sit around and wait for things to happen, Tacoma Redd plan to release the EP and do some touring by this summer whether the industry jumps on board or not.  “The experience of working with such an established musical mind as Moe Berg leaves us feeling very confident that this album will turn some heads in the right direction,” comments Smart.

Tour Dates:
February 28 – St. Catharine’s, ON @ The Mansion House
March 3 – Toronto, ON, CMW @ Crowbar 10pm

Daltrey and Townshend plan new album
Their generation may be middle-aged but this year, four decades after they burst on to Britain’s Mod scene, The Who are back.

With a world tour and their first new studio album in nearly 25 years, 2006 has already been branded the year of “The Who return” by Mojo magazine.

The group, whose line-up now includes Ringo Starr’s son Zac Starkey on the drums in place of Keith Moon, who died of a drugs overdose in 1978, will also break a self-imposed moratorium on playing at festivals, introduced after 11 fans were killed at a show in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1979.

Pete Townshend, one of the two surviving original members along with Roger Daltrey, said on his website: “There will be a tour. We already have European festival dates slotted in June and July.” The original bassist, John Entwistle, died of a heart attack in 2002.

A British and European tour will be followed by an American leg in the autumn and the rest of the world in 2007. The band is believed to be negotiating to play at Scotland’s T in the Park. Townshend also said he would deliver the new studio album – The Who’s first since It’s Hard in 1982. The singer-songwriter and guitarist said: “There will be a new CD sometime in the early summer. I know I’ve cried wolf a few times, but this time I have committed.”

Townshend’s girlfriend, the singer-songwriter Rachel Fuller, will perform her show, In The Attic, before every gig.

Townshend and Daltrey, who appear to have overcome their legendary rivalry, are now working together on the album, which will feature songs inspired by the Beslan school massacre.

In an interview with Mojo, Townshend said: “I find it very hard to please Roger. It’s as narrow a brief as it was when we were 17 … when I used to look at Roger and think … Roger is a tough guy from the ‘hood, I’ve gotta write songs about fighting.”

Wicked Wisdom Set To Release New Self titled Album

on February 21, Also, On Tour With Sevendust…
The invitation to perform at Ozzfest 2005 came at a perfect time for the band Wicked Wisdom who had an amazing summer on the tour. Now, WW is set to release their self titled debut on 100% Womon Records & Suburban Noize Records on February 21, 2006.

More than two years ago Wicked Wisdom set out on a fearless journey to create music that defies boundaries and convention. Fronted by lead singer Jada Pinkett Smith, Wicked Wisdom gives birth to a sound unconventional and confined in any single genre. Seamlessly fusing the screaming guitars of heavy rock, driving drums of speed metal and unmistakably locked grooves of funk, with a melodic vocal style; that is fierce and vulnerable.

When Wicked Wisdom’s Pocket Honore tuned down his Guitar and started writing new material with recent addition Cameron Graves A.K.A. Young Beige, the two realized they were creating a truly explosive sound.

This new sound combined with Smith’s searingly honest and revealing vocals proved the band was on the right path. The addition of Fishbone founding member Phillip “Fish” Fisher on the drums pushed the sound even deeper. Bass player Rio Lawrence’s extreme stage presence can only be topped by his ability to fly through his booming bass riffs with an easy aggression. Rhythm Guitarist and keyboard player Cameron Graves plays the crucial role of maintaining this band’s hard melody while accompanying Pocket’s wild guitar style.
It was not long before the Wicked Wisdom live show garnered major buzz and caught the attention of influential ears, including Ozzfest tour organizer Sharon Osbourne. Mistress of Ceremonies Sharon Osbourne boldly states, “I went to see Wicked Wisdom play last April in a tiny (Los Angeles) club at midnight. Let me tell you, I was blown away.

When you see and hear Jada with her band it’s apparent that she has nothing but love and respect for this genre of music. I totally respect that the band wants to pay their dues playing the second stage on Ozzfest.”

Wicked Wisdom is: Jada Pinkett Smith (vocals), Pocket Honore (lead guitar), Phillip “Fish” Fisher (drums), Rio Lawrence (bass guitar), Cameron Graves (rhythm guitar & keys)

Tour dates are as follows:

2/9 The Warehouse – Springfield, IL
