Damn! During the last 5 or 6 years I have received and checked out a damn lot Swedish retro thrash/death compos cds. Diabolical without any doubts belongs to the same “The New Wave Of The Swedish Retro Thrash Death genre,” kindred spirit to several other bands like Terror 2000, Maze Of Torment, Death Strike.
Diabolical’s stuff, however, is more based on the death metal approach by having the old school thrash metal riffs added to their merciless onslaught. Unfortunately, Diabolical\’s stuff turns out to be quite monotonous, repeating the same kind of the aggressive approach through the 30 minute output.
The main problem with these retro bands is their way of composing tracks. All of them try to adopt as many influences as possible by picking up cool guitar riffs from the old classic thrash/death albums released over a decade or more ago and try them out to their own tracks in order to sound damn cool. The older bands did marvelous tracks with the immortal riffs. Hw can we forget, for example, Kreator’s \”Pleasure To Kill\” or Exodus’ \”Lesson In Violence\” or Sodom’s \”Blasphemer\” or millions of other thrash tunes from the golden era of the 80’s? But when these retro bands of the current generation try to plagiarize these riffs by adding to their own tunes the result is quite pathetic and boring. On the other hand, it is damn these younger bands keep the thrash cult alive with their retro thrash approach–sometimes enough is enough!
Back to Diabolical. I guess the Swedes have been quite thrilled about the war as well, because of the outro may have been taken direct from some Finnish war movie(??) or why the heck there is a shout “Ryssat tuloo”. . .Basically the album is a total slaughter from the beginning to the end!!!
