A Hollywood film very loosely based on the discovery of Tim \’Ripper\’ Owens. Original title: Metal God.
What metalhead hasn\’t dreamed of being up there on stage under the lights with their favorite band? I think that is almost the universal dream of any metalhead. I know that through the years I have dreamed of being a big star, touring, singing in front of packed stadiums and everything that comes along with the rock n’ roll life. ROCK STAR is the story of one such dream come through. Everyone knows by now that the plot is loosely based on the story of Tim \”Ripper\” Owens who was plucked from a tribute band to front one of the greatest heavy metal groups of all time, Judas Priest. Though the basic plot is similar, ROCK STAR, originally titled METAL GOD, is a work of fiction.
The year is 1985, Chris Cole (Mark Wahlberg) is the lead singer in the Steel Dragon tribute band Blood Pollution. Steel Dragon are one of the biggest metal bands on the planet and Chris is a mega fan of the band. He knows everything from what songs were played on what tours 10 years earlier to what colour thread was embroidered into the leather jacket of Steel Dragon singer Bobby Beers. He eats, breathes, lives and performs the life of Bobby Beers right down having the same hair, movements and even English accent when called upon. Cole fronts Blood Pollution , a Steel Dragon Tribute band which consists of , among others Donny (Blas Elias of Slaughter) and Xander Cummins (Nick Cantanese of Black Label Society). Chris’ obsession with playing the Steel Dragon songs perfectly is at odds with Blood Pollution guitarist and Chris’ best friend Rob\’s (Tim Olyphant *Scream*) idea of what the band should be about. Chris is kicked out of his own band and things look bleak till he gets a call from Kirk Cuddy (Dominic West *28 days*), guitarist and band leader of Steel Dragon to audition. Chris goes to LA to meet his idols and the rest is history.
Now that is just the basic story of the movie and I don\’t want to give everything away. Jennifer Aniston gives a pretty good performance as Cole’s girlfriend. I have to give credit where credit is due. This is one of the more authentic movies I have seen about metal. Jeff Pilson from Dokken was hired as a creative consultant to help make sure that the movie stayed as true as possible to the sound and attitude of the 80s metal scene.. He was then hired to be the bass player of Steel Dragon. To make them as authentic as possible the whole band, except for the parts of Cuddy and singer Bobby Beers (Jason Flemyng *Snatch*), are made up of real musicians. Besides Cuddy and Pilson, Steel Dragon is Zakk Wylde; guitar (Black Label Society and Ozzy) and Jason Bonham, (Bonham) son of John Bonham of Led Zeppelin on drums. I don’t know what else to say about this movie. I enjoyed it immensely. If you have any interest in metal in general and 80s metal in particular you should get to the theatre and see this movie as soon as possible!!!!!!!
