At first look the cover of this one could pass for a metal album. Very deceiving, as this four piece from Oakland, California represent hardcore at its best. Powerhouse dish out 13 tracks plus one hidden one in the true vein of bands like Sick Of It All, Pro-pain and Madball. Full of street-wise lyrics and attitude, Powerhouse prove that they are still true underground. “Color Vs. Pride” takes a stand on racism, while “Bullet Proof” features a female singer improvising over hardcore, with an interesting twist.
A nod to Mike Rosen for the excellent production on this one, with lots of in-your-face guitar and clear double-kick sound. I will never turn in my studded wrist band for a skateboard, but I must say I enjoyed this CD immensely. The only drawback, as with most hardcore, is not enough diversity.
