A monster documentary and six videos.
As you may already know, I LOVE Stratovarius. As with any band that you love, seeing the band behind the scenes and seeing snippets from a band’s more than 10-year history is something any fan would be into. That said, if you love Stratovarius, then you are going to thoroughly enjoy this DVD. Infinite Visions is over two hours long and besides showing clips form Strato’s past it also has the videos for their songs: “A Million Light Years Away”, “Black Diamond”, “S.O.S.”, “Hunting High And Low”, “Kiss of Judas” and on the DVD, an unplugged version of “Hold On To Your Dream.” Since these videos are NEVER played on TV here in North America, this was the first time I had gotten to see any of them! Besides the videos, I’ll give you a rundown on what I thought were the highlights on the DVD.
Firstly it was cool to see older clips of Strato live like them playing “Fright Night” (1988) and “Out of the Shadows” (1994). This was before the vocal god Timo Kotipelto took over on lead vocals so we get to see guitarist Timo Tolkki handling the vocals live. My only complaint with some of the older clips is that they do not show the full song!! I didn’t care if some of the older stuff was not pro shot – it is passable and I wanted the full song damn it!!!! Throughout the DVD there are snippets of the band in the studio recording their last CD, Infinite. The highlight of those clips was hearing Timo Kotipelto singing some of “Hunting High And Low” by himself in the studio with the song playing on his headphones. Even with no backing music or effects on his voice, THIS GUY IS A GOD! It’s spine shivering; it’s so good…what a voice!! The surprise comedian on the DVD is Stratovarius keyboardist, Jens Johansson. Who knew this guy was so retarded? He blows up a toilet with stage pryo and in another scene entertains the band with his EVIL sounding Xmas jingles on the keys. Imagine the melody line played on one hand and the theme music from Psycho played with the other…twisted!
Other interesting things include the 2000 Wacken Open Air performance for the song “S.O.S.” – if you remember back to that, that is when Timo Kotipelto had the pyro scorch his hand!! You see him run back stage and come back out with his hand wrapped in a towel hardly missing a line. A final highlight on the DVD is the live version of “Infinity” from Lyon, France. The backing screen during their live performance features a video that reflects what the song is about by showing the contrast of the beauty there is in this world and in nature with the cruelty that mankind has perpetrated both upon one another and our irrelevance for this planet.
I could ramble on about the DVD but I’ll leave something for you to discover for when you get to watch it. By the way, if you want to complain that this is not in your local store…then don’t worry. Just go to www.calldownthethunder.com and make your order there.
